I hate the case. Wish I could get it in an "ordinary" case like one of the Smallville seasons or something.

You're probably right, because I don't see any similar scrathes on the cardboard under the discs. Only disc 2 of my set looks really bad (but not deep scratches, just a lot), but it seemed to play OK, so I'm debating sending it back only to possibly wind up with a really badly scratched set.

Beautiful packaging though. I just really hate the rubber spindles. Only thing good I can say about them is when the discs are on them, they don't spin; so it can't be shipping damage either.

Yeah, those rubber spindles sure do hold them in place. After looking at mine in some detail, I have to believe this happened at the factory, not in the shipping process. I wonder if Universal has a gaffe on their hands here.

I'm a prime member and got mine today though I only ordered on sunday.
However amazon didn't ship mine in a box they shipped it in a padded envelop so of course it came all crushed. the cardboard is crushed the plastic has creases and 3 discs are scratched. the miniseries is playable but not much else. Amazon is re-shipping me a replacement next day air.

So far not that impressed with the miniseris PQ compared to the SD-DVD. this is on my Mitsu 65732 from a A2 player

I think it's possible they may have been damaged after replication. So, did the replicator package them? If not, they may have been damaged en route to whomever did.

True, that's quite the possibility. Maybe I had the "master" copy.

I wish i read this thread before i bought the BSG set today. I should have shaked the case to check for floaters. 3 of the discs have noticable damage. Nothing crazy but when you buy an HD DVD boxset for 100 bucks you want them in perfect condition. I have watched the first two discs(both had slight scratches) and didn't have any playback issues whatsoever. I still may take the set back tomorrow to try and exchange it. Even if they play fine, since i take such good care of my DVD and HDM collection, I want them perfect. Anyway, like i wrote before i am loving this series what a great addition to the HD DVD lineup.

For what it's worth, I had NO floaters, in fact they were secured very well, but they were all scratched anyway. I'm polling a few forums to see if this is a widespread problem.

Just picked up my set in Edmonton (Canada). Pre-ordered on amazon.ca September 27th but apparently they didn't have enough stock to fill my order. (Shipped on first come, first serve ya right!) Anyway that’s a rant for another day. My discs are in great condition no scratches or other problems except disc 5 it has 3 very faint scratches almost at the outer edge of the disc, but I’ve played every episode on it with no problems (A20) Hopefully there aren’t to many of those scratched sets out there.

This is unbelievable. I'm scared to even open mine. After going through such a hassle trying to get a good Star Trek set, now I'm probably going to have to search for good BSG discs... And since Amazon only allowed one exchange on the Star Trek sets, I have to wonder if it will be possible to get a complete set of unscratched discs. So far, has anyone received a "good" set? I have enough trouble getting through some HD-DVDs when there are no visible scratches. I can't imagine what will happen with one that has them...

ARRRG son of a B, ALL of mine are scratched. Disc 1 did play fine.

Man..............

You actually found one? Nothing at any of the multiple FS/BB or Walmart stores down here in Calgary.

I was surprised that it didn't skip at 24p b/c alot of shows aren't filmed at that speed, unless i am crazy BSG is filmed at 24p. Let me start by saying that i have never seen the show before but decided to pick it up based on all the hype by friends and you guys on AVS. I think i started hearing about BSG a couple years ago but i never start watching a show on broadcast when i suspect i may like it B/C i want to start from the begining and prefer hard media.

Well after an hour and a half i am definitly hooked. What a great and interesting story. I can't wait to get back to watching. I think people have made to much a deal about the grain. I realize some people want all there HDM looking like planet earth, but i find the grain really adds to the auhtenticity and mood of the show. I also thought 300 looked great. People need to judge HDM based on how well it present the directors original intention not on how clear and sharp the picture is. BSG looks great in HD not to mention tricia Helfer.

THe sound quality is good and i would never critize a studio offering a high rexz track, all HDM should have lossless audio IMHO, but it definitly isn't Batman Begins or 300. I just don't think the show has the type of production that can afford the sound design of top hollywood blockbusters. Don't get me wrong, BSG sounds really good, it just isn't the best AQ i have heard. Surrounds are definitly effective, especially in the space battle scenes, it just doesn't have that sustained surround ambiance you hear in the best HD DVD has to offer. The above is not a complaint, just an observation. The HD presentation of BSG is really impressive, and the pip is really cool and informative from the couple of U-control scenes i watched. Overall i am estatic i picked up this great series, i am also really happy that i waited for the full HD experience before i got addicted to BSG.

Thanks for the review. I too never watched this series, but have heard great things about it. This comes from people that have similar preferences in "Sci-fi" films/shows. I'll probably pick this up and be hooked like you.

You still shouldn't have any problem playing them. I know I've never had a problem playing any discs that got scratched from moving around in the case.

you'll love it! I kick myself for holding out so long so now I am catching up before Season 4 starts in March.

I think i'll hold of on this purchase for a couple of weeks in hope that the scratch issue is resolved in the next shipment.

I doubt it will be, unless they change the packaging, which they should.. but probably won't.

I can't tell if I have scratched discs, because I can't get the discs out. This is the dumbest packaging ever. Rubber hubs on flimsy pieces of cardboard? Genius.

Yeah mine played with the scratches. if it hadn't been for the packaging getting crushed because amazon shipping in an envelope instead of a box I probably wouldn't have returned them.

Yeah, except the scratches probably aren't the fault of the packaging after all.

That said, rubber hubs = major PITA.

I requested a replacement. I managed to get the discs off those hubs. Most looked pretty good. Each seemed to have at least one small concentric mark, but I could live with that. One disc was severely scratched up, though. Looked like someone gave it to their cat to play with. I'm hoping the next set will at least have a better copy of that disc and I can mix and match the two to make a "best of".

Right.... it does help if you speak the native language of a country that you live in. Ya know... it *might* be a benefit.

It's just odd that I had only one REALLY bad disc. The rest had a very minor mark that I'm not sure would even bother me and I'm incredibly anal when it comes to the condition of this stuff (plus, I'm lucky if I ever get around to watching some of this stuff and it's not like I can test all the content on every disc within the return window). I think it was disc 5 that had the claw marks all over it.

My replacement should be here tomorrow (Amazon customer service kicks ass again) - I'll be content if I can at least get a disc 5 in the same shape as the others.

Ya Futureshop and BB have no copies in Edmonton. And my Amazon.ca preorder didn't ship so they didn't get stock either. 2 out of 5 HMV's had copies that's where I got mine.
Wow, looks like I dodged a bullet when I canceled my order. I decided to spend my money on a nice pair of headphones, and just rent this series. It sucks that they're all scratched up!

frostychocolate,

How much did you end up paying at HMV? Was it significantly more than the $79.99 that Futureshop is offering it for (or will be offering it for when the finally receive some...)?

Thanks!

that is my plan as well. mix and match to get the best set I can between the 2. then return the worst of them.
3 of the 6 discs are badly scratched here. I also requested replacement. I'll keep these till I get the replacements, and hopefully mix and match to get a decent set.

I also noted that all of the discs had small bits of grit when I removed them. so I'm guessing that somewhere in the packaging process the discs are getting spun in these retarded cases and scratched by whatever the grit is.

Worst case of disc packaging I've ever seen, they are in no way protected from light or dust or moisture. Plus it's impossible to get a disc out without bending it and fingerprinting it.
