Lack of English subs on Hero is a serious bummer.

I thought I read somewhere that Hero didn't have English subs?

I betcha if they had put English subs on that German Hero HD DVD, they would have sold several times as many copies.

I would have bought one for sure.

Me too. Serious oversight when there are plenty of English subs available for this movie.

Serpico has been available for some time in France with DTS-HD MA english track. Bought it when I visited France at Virgin Megastore and looks very nice. Definite upgrade over the sd version.

A WORD OF CAUTION!

HERO - Director's Cut has the ICT-flag set, which means that resolution is limited to 480p if the player is connected via analog component cables with the display.

No, you cannot import from there. The site which you're linking to appears to be a selection of rewards for the subscription of a journal or newspaper.

Anyone know if either or both of the French and German releases of Serpico have forced non-english subtitles?

Really? How many of these discs actually exist?

I don't think I've heard of any North American discs for example with the ICT flag set.

I'm aware of actually 3 (three) titles:

Resident Evil
Resident Evil - Apocalypse
Hero -Director's Cut

all of them released in Germany by the same distributor: Highlight Entertainment/Constantin Film. To make things worse, they don't even have a warning printed on the case.

ICT=on has been confirmed by several german HT fans. I myself own "Hero", and can confirm this as well. My HD-XE1 is connected to my non HDMI compliant HD CRT, and when I insert the movie the Toshiba comes up with a message, that output resolution will be limited to 480p. This is actually worse than the german PAL DVD, which delivers 576p, at a fraction of the selling price. Worth to know is that the XBox-AddOn doesn't show a warning, it even keeps on outputting 1080i/p signals, but it seems it quietly re-converts the picture 1080->480->1080.

I believe they are both the same Studio Canal disc. I have the French one and it has forced French subtitles when watched with original English audio. When watched with French or German dub audio, subtitles are off. Subs can be resized and moved around but since aspect ratio is 1.75, they can't be moved outside of the image.

That's just stupid. I guess they assume that no French people can understand more than one language.
