AVRs that support HDMI Audio MPCM or HBR Decoders

Thread Starter
Eric Carrol has started a very useful thread on Pre-Pros that use HDMI to perform Multichannel PCM (MPCM) and/or pass High Bit Rate (HBR) bitstream for receiver decoding of newer High res formats. I know many folk are also using these units as pre-pros, but we'll capture them here.

Please help me to identify new (within last year) or near release units that can perform these capabilities with links to specs. My initial list is colored because I have been looking at higher end units so please provide links as much more affordable units have these capabilities. If you can provide a link to the unit, I'll add it to the list. To be additional informative it would be useful to note the number of HDMI inputs, what codecs are included in the AVR (please talk about you don't need them in the receiver in a different thread) and any video processing.

Next version of the table will reflect:
1) VSX-1018TXH-K is 1.3a & HBR but need more details than press announcement
2) Sunfire announces Theater Grand 401 Receiver (TGR-401), details required.
3) Need additional data on other models to include - Manufacturer, Model #, Link to specs, # & Type of HDMI in & # & Type of HDMI Out, DSD over HDMI, Audio Additional Info, Video Tech, Pass Thru, Upconversion over HDMI, Scaling/Deinter-
lacing, Other Notes

Thanks for the kudo. I know when I was hunting around for info and choices, I could really use as a one stop for info and links.

For everyone, this is only as updated and useful as people send in corrections and links/specifics for models I'm missing. I know I'm missing some of the more affordable ones that have these new capabilities.

Added Sony models and fixed Onkyo (605 & 705 only PCM 5.1 based on individual threads)

Onkyo TX-NR605, 2 in HDMI 1.3a, upconversion to 720p, DTS-MA, TrueHD HBR bitstream

What does upconversion to 720p mean exactly? I'd throw out examples about what I think it means but I'd rather not embarass myself.
Rudolpht,

The Denon 2308CI, and 1908CI both support multichannel PCM (not HBR), per this comparison chart.

I believe previous versions of Denon AVR that supported HDMI 1.3 also supported 8ch PCM.

On this unit my understanding is it does upconvert 480i/480p inputs, but it only passes thru the higher res inputs. I fixed the wording. Thank you.

Eric,

Thank you. I have been behind on updating the lower end equipment and this really helps. Updated those AVRs.

Hopefully I'll get more inputs on the lower end items regarding the other manufacturers.

Thanks,
Tim

Correct me if I am wrong, is the Integra the only full pre-pro (and not reciever) that has advanced codecs?
Why is Onkyo TX-NR705 in the 5.1?? Does it not convert HDMI audio to 7.1 as it is 1.3a compliant???

I believe you are thinking about the Integra 9.8 pre-pro, not the Integra 8.8 receiver. If you have a reference to manufacturer docs I'll certainly change it. Glad folks are reviewing.

The listing mentions that it can do HBR bitstream, but for PCM channels, I could only see 6 channels, 5.1. If you have a reference anywhere I'll move it down to the bottom category. I'll create a new category in the interim. THANK YOU.

That's not PCM, though.

This kind of listing is *very* helpful, good idea.

Just a few corrections:

The Denon 4308 uses the same Faroudja video processing as the 3808.
The Denon 5308 uses Realta HQV video processing.
The Onkyo 875 has the same Reon HQV video processing as the 905.

Obviously, I have spent too much time checking out the VP capabilities...

You would think that with 7.1 analog ins & outs it would be 8 channel PCM but I agree, and I can't find a reference specifically on PCM channels for the unit anywhere.

Fixed up. A man after my own heart on the video processing interest.

There is also a Sony STR-DG2100 that has the same features as the STR -DA4300ES.

Rudolpht,

Denon 2808 does HDMI PCM 8 ch, HBR codecs, HDMI 2 IN/1 OUT and Faroudja FLi2310

I'm curious about this too...Seems like the 605 and 705 are placed in the wrong categories.

What about these receivers from Yamaha? Do any of these handle it properly?

If you have a reference that shows 8 channel PCM (7.1) PCM then I'm happy to move it. I'm just reading the threads on the units. Do you have one. Do you have a PCM player that puts out 7.1 PCM on a 7.1 hidef format dist such that the rears give sound WIYJOUT Dolby IIx or some other synthesized rears?

This table is ONLY as good as the input I get from owners or folks that have researched the units. I'll bend over backwards to update the table if you provide the model, link to the manufacturer literature, and provide the details on number of PCM channels supported, if HBR is supported, HDMI ins (and ots if more than one), video processing, and any included Hi Res formats the receivers decode.

For example, Eric provided the info and a reference above.

I have added all the items that can be verified to the list, but I only did the research on the items I looked at. This is not a full time job and the pay suxx
post #27 of 158
I looked at the V661.

It is HDMI 1.2, 8ch PCM, no HBR codecs, 2 in/1 out HDMI. I did not check if it would apply PLIIx to the PCM stream.

The future proof AVRs thread lists the 6060 and up as 8ch PCM.

Eric
661 can apply PLIIx on pcm stream.

I rent my movies from netflix and unfortunately I don't have any 7.1 movies at home. I believe I watched them all (4 or 5 blu-ray discs) and I believe they showed up on my receiver as 7.1 (I had the 605 at the time).

If you look at the future proof receiver thread, you can see that both the 605 (level 4) and the 705 (level 6) can pass 7.1 HDMI PCM.

Both the Denon 3808 and 4808 have 4 HDMI 1.3a inputs not 3.
