I know a user mentioned in the "PS3 as a BD player" official thread, someone mentioned that his receiver didn't do anything to incoming PCM with regards to bass management.
It's kind of like receivers that don't do any processing of multi-channel analog ins, meaning you have to set speaker distances and do bass-management within the player itself.
My own receiver, the Sony 5300ES, seems to have a strange problem of outputting the .1 sub level 4dB lower than it should be when processing PCM. I tried this with the Avia setup disc on both PS3 and Denon 2910 players, and when using Bitstream, bass is fine. When using PCM, sub level is 4dB low. Note that Avia uses bass routed through individual channels for setting the sub level, so this isn't an incoming LFE channel issue.

The problem is, not many people, even here on AVSForum, have SPL meters, do their own level setting and calibration, or even if they did, would pick up on something like this. So even if certain receivers do have problems, until someone notices it they appear to be fine.
