Strange distortion problem with old speakers and new TV

Happy Thanksgiving!

I recently bought a 52" LCD HDTV and set it up with my old speakers on each side of the stand. The speakers are MTX 4-Way with 15" subwoofers. I can look for a model number if it makes any difference. Yeah, I know they're big, but I love the sound.

Anyway, I usually don't have a problem playing sound through it. However, two or three times in the last week, all of the sudden I get a very loud humming noise. That's the best way I can describe it. Also, it's important to mention that all the normal audio (voice, sound effects, music, etc.) is gone when this happens. The first time it happened, I was watching a movie, and this humming started about half way through, surprising the hell out of me, especially since the humming is about twice as loud as the movie audio was.

The only way I got the humming to stop and the normal audio back, was to turn off my receiver and turn it back on again.

My TV has the ability to turn off the TV speakers and use the audio system. BTW, I have a Sony KBL52W3000. One thing about it that I don't like is it doesn't use a Line connection, so my audio system volume is affected by the tv volume. Maybe that has something to do with this?

So, this has happened a couple more times, and I'm worried that I might be damaging something. Not to mention, it's annoying as hell. Is this a magnet issue? Do I have to sell these speakers and get something that I can put farther from the TV? Am I maybe not setting it up right? I have all my sound sources (DVD, CD) go to the TV, then out to the receiver via RCA or composite audio cables (the red and white ones, whatever they're called).

Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks.

The problem does not sound like it is your speakers. More like how your receiver is hooked up to your tv. I did a quick search on the Sony KBL52W3000, I couldn't find it, what is it? When your receiver is wired properly, the tv sound volume should be independent of the receiver/speaker combo.

Your audio signal should not be coming from the tv to the receiver, but rather from your cable box or satellite box to the receiver.

Sorry, it's the Sony KDL-52W3000. What about channels it picks up through its QAM tuner? I'd have to connect my TV audio out to my receiver to get sound for those channels. I could try hooking up the DVD player directly to the receiver though, see if it makes a difference there. Thanks for the suggestion.

I concur with sterankoman that it can't be the speakers, unless they are too great a load for the receiver (unlikely, but worth considering). Have you used those speakers with the same receiver in the past without issue?

More likely is that it is some issue with the receiver or the audio connection to the receiver, or the receiver or a source component (TV is the source for the QAM channel audio) is bad. Or maybe the speaker wire is shorting out and that is overloading the receiver.

On a perhaps unrelated issue, is there an option in the TV's setup menu to set the audio output to FIXED? My old Sony TVs have that, and it switches the sound output jacks to line-level so they don't change with the TV volume control. It is a separate setting from just turning the TV speakers on and off.

Yes, I've had this speaker/receiver combo for 10 years without any problems. The speaker wire is also the same. I will look for the FIXED option. Is it possible that the TV's speakers are interferring, because the manual warns of magnetic interference from its speakers? I will try the suggestions today, and see what happens.
