-edit-

Yes, I meant 65:35, the extra 10% is for the possible influx of new hdm owners.

Did I miss something? Is this going to outsell "transformers"?

Don't want to get in to it here but this is the way I see it:

1. Star trek season 1 only released on HD DVD Combo

2. A lot of the Old star trek fans are now in IT jobs (generalisation) which are reasonably well paid.

3. Even though they might not have HD DVD players they will buy for the DVD side (most trekkies I know are fanatical buyers - will buy on day of release)

actually want to change my guess

I think Star Trek will flop on the combo, should slightly increase from what HD-DVD only would do, but nowhere near validate the decision not to release on DVD.

Edit; And I can imagine there are already plans underway for the DVD version.

Recently these damn numbers are so hard to predict. It's all fickle with the BOGO's, holiday sales, and now combo-only releases. Damn you Nielsen! Damn youuuuuuuuu!

The last few weeks have had very strange results, and I have no idea how this week will play out. I think the Star Trek set is too expensive to have a real impact, though.

Die Hard will sell HUGE.
Santa Clause will move copies.
Hairspray will be ENORMOUS.
Rescue Dawn is still a new actiony day-and-date release, which usually sell well.

Star Trek will move decent numbers, and while I think the whole combo-only approach is a great one (one Universal should have employed from the beginning, along with lower pricing), I think Paramount has shot themselves in the foot with this one. The trekkies with cash will love it, but $140 plus is a lot to ask for one season of an old show.

This is also Black Friday week here, folks, so who knows anyway. A lot of variables to take into consideration, but I think the shoppers will be more tuned into the holiday hits, like Die Hard, Hairspray, and to an extent Santa Clause for the kiddies.

10 free discs with players count towards these numbers, making a difference for HD-DVD. When it comes down to actually purchasing titles, there will be trouble.

HD DVD had a very strong week - DVD Empire showed 55:45 and Amazon showed a heavy lead for HD DVD. More HD DVD players sold recently may help account for this.

I'm going for an HD DVD lead on Nielsen for the week.

I see the pace staying about the same as the last couple weeks:

Watching Star Trek on Amazon did nothing to inspire confidence in its sales. I expected a lot more, but it never broke the top 100 in DVD during it's release week. Here's a place where box sets thrive as well.

Regardless, due to the other sales, HD DVD dominated over at amazon.

I'm guessing:
