What happened to the market in the US for 1080p lcds in the 30-40" range?

I've been wanting to buy a 1080p lcd to use for a movie/console gaming/pc monitor. Early in the year I missed out on a few Westinghouse 37" deals because I was't ready to make a move yet, now I just recently found out that Westinghouse has discontinued their 1080p 37" line. Also early in the year there were rumours that Toshiba was going to bring its version of the 37" 1080p panel over to the US (its available only in the UK now) and I guess that decision was dropped as there are none to be found. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-37X3...sbs_ce_title_3

Philips also makes a 37" 1080p set, but again like the Toshiba it can only be purchased in the UK. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-37PF...d_sbs_ce_img_1 To add more insult to the injury Panasonic makes a 37" 1080p set, but take a wild guess on where it's been sold. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-37...d_sbs_ce_img_6

So where does that leave the US consumers who are interested in a mid size 1080p lcd? From the best of my knowledge the choices are limited to the Gateway and Sharp offerings which are both very expensive (well over the 1k mark). In fact these sets are priced higher than many of its larger screen equivalents, I've literally seen some 50"+ 1080p lcds go for less than the cost of a 32" Sharp and the 30" Gateway.

So basically I'm just confused as to why. Why are the midrange 1080p lcd consumers in the US being ignored?

i think as we've seen on black friday they have a ton of 720p sets left in these sizes and are trying to dump them .

I've been searching for a good set around 1k for 40-42 inches and they just don't exist outside of teh vizio brand which is really disapointing. Even black friday sales would have let me buy a 46inch set for less than the 42 inch sets in the same family

Yeah I don't know, that is actually a pretty good question. After sharp came out with the 32" and 37" gaming LCDs (think they were GP1U or something like that) I would have thought that more companies would have followed suit with 1080p LCDs in the 30-40" range. The fact of the matter is, you have to sit pretty close to a 32" LCD to notice the difference between 1080p and 720p. However, the smaller 1080p sets make great media/computer monitors for auxiliary rooms and such. Perhaps the companies didn't see any demand for these smaller sets (which is hard to believe because 32-37" sets are ideal for smallish bedrooms and such - IE: kids rooms for their PS3/360/etc...)

because people keep getting told you wont see any difference under a 50", that plasma is the better choice and whatever other garbage people have tossed around.

until now the price/size was very different. I'm sure this last week and a half hasnt made it any easier for companies to bring the smaller models here with the prices. with kids not needing 40" tv's in their room, I'm sure they will eventually get them out here.

but they also compete with monitors that go for less like the 24" samsung.

Don't forget about the Sony sets which also includes the high end xbr model.... although I've heard that people are more than happy with the S3000 models.

What about the Westinghouse 37w3se?

It's got a couple poor reviews on Newegg, but $860 shipped is a hell of a deal IMO. I can't post links yet (don't have at least 3 posts) but you can search it at Newegg.

1080p sets at those smaller sizes are just a waste of money. You'll be spending money on pixels that you couldn't even see on a 720p set at realistic viewing distances.

That's not entirely true if you're using the monitor as a PC display. The increased resolution will yield much crisper text and better graphics in games.

See that's the thing, there are a lot of people that want to use those sets for computer usage. Up close... it's fairly easy to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p...

Obviously if you are sitting 12' from a 32" set you aren't going to see the difference. However, why the hell would you be sitting 12' from a 32" set to begin with! (just random numbers)
