what will I need to do the following

Hi, I'm way over my head hear and after reading many posts, reviews and information I'm no closer to my goal.

Below is my current setting, what I want to do and what I think that I will be purchasing. Please let me know if I'm on the right track or if I need to do something else.

Current setting

Vizio 1080p 47 lCD HDTV
Sony PS3
Dishnetwork vip622 receiver
Yamaha DD receiver

what I would like to do
- Connect my PC directly to the LCD TV via hdmi, component or vga to get 1080p support
- play hd and blue ray dvds
- capture video from my Sony HD camcorder and play it on the TV
- capture videos from my old mini DV tapes to the hard drive of my pc and play them back on the lcd tv
- view all my photos on the tv
- backup some of my dvds to the pc hard drive or external hd and play them back on the tv
- somehow to be able to take the video out of my DVR and back it up to my PC (just as if I hook up a vcr to my DVR). I'm not looking to replace my DVR here, just to be able to record or back my shows while I'm watching them. This way I will not run out of space on my DVR.
- browse the internet and play youtube and other video on my tv
- move the ps3 downstairs and use a smaller TV and then stream content to the ps3 to be played back on that TV

I'm thinking of purchasing HP media center desktop with the following
Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit)
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q6600 (2.4GHz)
4GB DDR2-667MHz dual channel SDRAM (4x1024)
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT, TV-out, DVI-I, HDMI
Wireless LAN 802.11a/b/g/n & Bluetooth(R )
500GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
Blu-ray writer / HD DVD player & Lightscribe SuperMulti DVD burner
15-in-1 memory card reader, 2 USB, 1394, video, audio
ATSC-NTSC TV tuner with PVR, FM tuner, remote

well, am I way off here or do I need to look into another direction? any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

you should be able to do everything you have listed, but you are going to have to do a lot more reading here. All of these topics are covered, but it is way to much to try to reply to in a single thread.

The only thing that may cause issues is backing up your DVR. I believe some models allow it to be done real time through firewire, but most don't.

Also, you will be shocked at how fast 500GB will be eaten up. I am on my 3rd 500 GB drive, and I will probably need two more to back up my movie collection.

Thanks Davdev. Yeah, I know that I wuill need to do more research about what I'm looking for.

As for the HD size, yeah I thought about that too and I'm hoping that in the future I will build a NAS to store more digital content on it.

If there are more suggestions please let me know.
Thanks

Take a look at the R5000 modded Dish receiver's (threads here and here), as I believe they are one of the very limited options available for archiving E* programming on a PC. AFAIK, it's not currently compatible with Vista...

EDIT: With external HDD archiving now an option for the ViP622, you're probably better off buying a decent 500-750Gb HDD, and using that for conserving space on the 622.

Thanks Allin4greeN. I was going to get for my VIP622 but the fees imposed by dishnetwork did not sit well with me.

So is there away to have the video/audio out from my TV to be recorded on my PC?
I used to do this with my DVD player/burner before it died on me. So what I want to do is to record what ever I'm watching on my TV screen to my PC.
If anyone know if this possible, please let me know and what is the best way.

Cheers

if your receiver can output everything to svideo/rca then you can buy an encoder card for the pc and thatll do it. but nothing on pc can record from hdmi/dvi.

just to clarify one thing, I want to be able to take the S out from the DVR and capture the video to my PC. Is this doable and what is the best capture card to do it with?
Thanks

It is do-able, but it will NOT be in HD. S-Video only supports 480p.

It will work on any Tuner card with an S-Video In port. I've done it on my old PVR150. It just looks like regular SD broadcasting...

Newone88 have you successfully connected your DVR to the PC using s-video?
After reading your list I have many of the same wants. The biggest is to connect a PC to the DVR. I have hooked up an external hard drive to the 622's USB and am using it for archiving. I then connected the hard drive to my PC and the PC doesn't recognize any files on that the DVR placed on the hard drive. One of the things I'd like to do is take concert footage and make an mp3, or other audio format, so that I can listen to it on an mp3 player. Any way to do that?
