Just picked up a AVR-888 used for 140usd, it was missing the remote, but had the mic LOL. Im using a 80gig PS3 for my source to my VS pro8100 and a 110" screen, and all i can say is wow. It took a little screwing around to get the 7.1 to work and the mic setup is a little slow ( dont know if others are faster). But once i finally got it all running its now a dream. Im running all S1 BJC and the reciever is set to pass HDMI without altering it, and set to accept direct PCM.

2 questions though,

-does it pass through 1080p 24? I havent had a chance to test this yet.

-does this reciever have any known issues? the guy i got it from said that 1 or 2 of the component inputs was bad, but i was hoping he had them mapped wrong or iVSp scaling issue and there was no display. I was using HDMI so that didnt matter anyway.

thanks in advance.

I am looking at moving this receiver to replace a Denon 3200 in another room. I found a AVR-2308 and am trying to determine if I can connect the Oppo player through the HDMI and allow the player to decode the DTS-MA and DD-HD which from what I have read the receiver will do. What I need to know is if the HDMI input will allow me to play the DVD-Audio and SACD in multi-channel without having to connect the analog Ext-in. Any help would be apprecitated.

first stop should be batpigworld. see the model numbers page of my site:
http://batpigworld.com/models.html

as indicated in the chart, 2308/888 can accept up to 7.1 PCM over HDMI but cannot decode ANY hi-rez audio, including DTS-MA, TrueHD, or DSD (from SACD). However, your Oppo can decode everything to multich PCM, so let the player to all the decoding and you are good to go.

So, I've been ripping my hair out getting my 2308ci set up, not quite like the stereo receivers I'm used to. A couple of questions: I'm running a blue ray player and uverse digital cable on the hdmi inputs, and one HDMI out to my samsung lcd tv , the problem is that unless both video sources are on, I cannot get a picture on the monitor. For example, if the blu-ray is off and I just want to watch tv, it wil not show the video feed, the audio works however. This would not be a huge deal, but my blu-ray shuts off after not being used every 1/2 hour or so. Any ideas on a way to address this?

zoo mob:

I have not seen that exact scenario. I have all my sources hooked through an HDMI switcher to a single input on the AVR-888. I don't have a problem with not getting video. My problem is if I turn off the TV then the audio starts skipping or dropping in and out. I used to do that with a DLink Media Extender and it worked fine. It may be an issue with my switcher since when running the DLink I was going component out straight to the TV.

I know what oyu mean about modern AVRs being a whole new beast. I went from a 20 year old stereo receiver to the Denon AVR-88. It was a bit of a shock with all the things you could do and HAD to do with it. But I'll tell you 5.1 surround so nice on it now. Makes me wonder why I didn't move earlier. ;-)

It should be a big deal as there's definitely something wrong. If you're getting video/audio from each source then you apparently have the Input source settings correct. This sounds like an HDMI handshake issue (unique at best though). Does your LCD use DVI by any chance? Give the HDMI Reset procedure a try and if that doesn't work then try Resetting the microprocessor (follow procedure listed in your Owner's manual near the back).

HDMI Reset
1. While all HDMI devices are on, disconnect HDMI cable from TV
2. Turn off power to all devices (not in standby)
3. Disconnect all HDMI feeds at both ends [NOTE where they go back]
4. Wait 2 minutes
5. Reconnect all HDMI cables
6. Apply power to TV, then AVR, then HDMI video source

I'll try those options, thanks for the ideas. Will resetting the microprocessor necessitate me redoing the audessy and all of the input settings?

Welcome zoo mob, resetting Microprocessor will reset all settings back to their default settings including having to do AUTO SETUP again.

The HDMI reset worked great, thanks.

On to the next problem, how the heck do I get the audio working on my wii? I've got it running through the DVR input using component video which works fine, but no audio. The audio RCAs are going into the DVR inputs as well. What gives?

Assign DVR Input Mode to "Analog"

Once again, thanks, it works great now.

I'll start out by saying this is my first post. I've been reading the forum for over a week, the Denon manual for over 2 months, and batpig's "Denon to English dictionary" for 2 days. What a breath of fresh air that document is. Thank you batpig!! It is helping my understanding of my system immensely. I have an 888 that was set up in 5.1 for my downstairs TV. The work was done by a professional during the construction of our new home and consequently I don't know squat about how the system actually works. But I'm learning. My current problem is that I changed some of the settings on the audio (without recording what the original was) and now the audio is not working correctly. According to the front panel on the 888 the input audio is digital but only stereo (LF and RF). The output lights indicate 5.1 but I cannot get 5.1 dolby digital. The best I can do is 5 channel stereo. Could it be a bad HDMI cable (I'm getting a spare tomorrow) or a problem with the DirecTV box. My setup is as follows;

Sony Bravia XBR4 LCD
Denon 888
DirecTV HD-DVR Satellite Cable box

TV to Denon via HDMI
Cable box to Denon via HDMI

Thanks

Hi guys, I've been a member and lurker on AVS for a while now but this is my first post and I hope someone can offer some advice.

I am having a problem getting both video and audio from a DVI/HDMI connection from my OPPO 971H to my AVR. I can hook it up to my AVR via RCA cables and it works fine, but once I switch over to the DVI/HDMI cable I get no video nor audio. It's frustrated me enough that I have reverted my AVR back to the factory settings, assigned the DVD channel as HDMI and I still get nothing.

What am I missing here? Some help would be greatly appreciated at this point.
Update on previous post. It seems that I can't get any of my "assign" functions to work. I've tried "assigning" channels with optical and HDMI inputs but nothing is working. I must be approaching this incorrectly.

Please, any help is appreciated!
it really shouldn't be this hard, other than assigning the inputs it should be plug-and-play. do you have any other devices which DO work correctly, so you can at least narrow down the problem to the Oppo? Or can you get nothing to work?

also, note that DVI/HDMI will never carry audio, it will be video-only.

I agree it shouldn't be this hard! I feel like a moron since it seems everyone else can get this to go smoothly.

All I have are a SD satellite receiver and a Wii. Both work fine but they are connected through RCA. This is the only source I am wanting to connect via HDMI.

The Oppo worked a day earlier when it was connected with the same DVI/HDMI connection. I'm really at a loss and I am racking my brain trying to figure out what I am doing wrong.

Here are my settings:

HDMI IN: HDMI1
Digital In: None
Component In: None
iPodDock: None

Input Mode: Auto
Decode Mode: Auto

Video Convert: ON

I sincerely appreciate the help, Batpig.

Use HDMI-1 (DVD/HDP) for video and COAX-1 (DVD/HDP) for audio.
HDMI-1 and COAX-1 is default to (DVD/HDP) so don't need to assign inputs (plug-and-play ).

I just reset my microprocessor, once again, and used HDMI for video and coax for audio and I still get neither video nor audio. This is really drawing on my last nerves. I may be a slight newb at home theater, but this really shouldn't be giving me a problem.

EDIT: I just tried using optical for the audio through OPT1 and I am now getting audio! Great, a step in the right direction!

However, I still can't get video through HDMI1. Could this be a cable issue?

EDIT 2: As I assumed, this turned out to be a problem with the connection between the remote and the receiver. I had the receiver hooked up to the display via S-Video. I now have no problems. I appreciate the help guys.

I had the receiver hooked up to the display via S-Video.

that would have been an important piece of information to mention!!

glad you got it up and running

I was running a Pioneer Elite DVD with both stereo and 7ch all working with LFE. all speakers set to small. Now I just added a Samsung 2500 Bluray. I am using the External In jacks (all 7 speakers and LFE OK) for DVD movies. But for CD's I do not get any LFE on Ext. IN. setting. I have changed all the DVD audio options with no luck. My reciever SW settings work for my other DVD/Cd player. Any ideas?
Samsung Owners manual:

Thanks.
EXT IN jacks get NO PROCESSING, they are a straight analog pass through to the amps. All processing (such as bass management) can only be done in the SOURCE. The only way you could get bass with 2-ch content via the EXT IN jacks is if the Sammy BDP can do the bass management before sending it out (so the Denon would receive a 2.1 signal).

The big question is, why are you not using an HDMI connection from the BDP? You have an HDMI BDP and an HDMI AVR, that's the whole point!

At the minimum, make a 2-ch analog connection or digital SPDIF (optical) for CD's so you can access bass management and other processing.

Samsung Owners manual:

Thanks.

As is often the case, the Samsung 2500 manual incorrectly refers to the LFE channel as the "sub" channel, rather than the .1 track in DD/DTS 5.1 tracks on your DVDs. Although letting the AVR do the bass management would be best as batpig suggests, should you choose to continue to use the analog connection, check p. 38 in your 2500 Owner's manual to ensure that you have the speaker settings correctly setup as SMALL and subwoofer set to YES so it can do the bass management correctly. You can also send test tones for each speaker to ensure they are setup correctly. Also, keep in mind that CD's don't have a LFE track so the only bass you'll get is whatever frequencies exist on the tracks that are below 100hz (which often aren't much) when using the 2500 bass management system.
Thanks for the info.
Batpig, I thought I could only get DD Hd and DTS MA with the 7.1 analogs to my 2308. Are you saying I could get it from the HDMI? I have connected an optical cable for the cd music I was just wondering about the Ext In.
Thanks,
PR
The 2308 is not capable of decoding the HD audio bitstream tracks over HDMI; however, you should still be able to set the 2500 to decode it to PCM over HDMI and let the 2308 provide the bass management.

yes, regardless of whether you send multich analog or multich digital (PCM) the player is decoding the audio right? either way you are getting the full lossless track. But with digital, the 2308 can accept up to 7.1 channels of hi-rez PCM, and then you will get full access to Audyssey, bass management, etc.
Thanks Batpig and JDS for the info. The HDMI works great and I get LFE when in stereo using the 2308. However I think I will still use the Pioneer Elite 45A for cd's. Seems to be a better match for my Klipsch Chorus II's.

Ah...here's the Denon 2308CI thread....

Basically...can I use the ZONE2 PRE-OUT for my Aragon 3002 power amp to power the front R-L speakers? I want to have more power for the front channels and still have the remaining channels used for surround use.

I had this capability with my Denon AVR-2106 as it had PRE-OUTs for all channels. I just used the FR and FL PRE-OUTs and was ready to go.

I'm on page 54 of the owner's manual and it looks as if this is possible. I just want to confirm this before I start ripping stuff out.

I can still use the main remote, right? I don't want to have to use the other, smaller remote for this function.

I'd rather not have to buy a whole new unit (such as the Denon AVR-988) as it has PRE-OUTs for all channels.
Sorry, but no. The Zone2 pre-outs are for Zone2 speakers only and the signal passed to them must be analog only as well.

Hello all! Im fairly new to home audio and video, but not new to forums. So, I have done my research before asking this. Didnt have any luck finding an answer.

Can you play a video source like tv or dvd while playing the tuner like you can on some denon models? I tried going to tuner then pressing video select; and it would say the video source I wanted, but the video source would stay on tuner and show the radio station on the screen instead of tv or dvd.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks all!
