Below is a copy of the inquiry I wrote to Nvidia technical support today. I will post the results when I hear back. If anyone has any answers or workarounds that would help with this problem please help. I am also posting a link from a review comparing the ATI 2600xt and the 8600gts cards. The results are unless you are using Vista, the 8 series cards pretty much suck compared to the ATI's cards which eliminates my option of going back to XP for HT use unless I dump this card and go to ATI.

I am using this card for my HTPC. My display is an NEC XG1100 CRT projector capable of 1080P. One of he most valuable atributes of this diplay is it's ability to utilize custom resolutions and refresh rates. For HDDVD I use 1920 by 800 by 48hx or 72hz. This maximizes PQ for scope aspect films and eliminates judder. I chose Vista for this system because the 8600 GT does not perform well in comparison to the ATI2600xt in winXP but although is not as good with noise reduction as the ATI model, it is much better for gaming. Now that you have my backgound info. I will detail my problem. First I cannot achieve custom resolutions with your drivers and have control of porches which is neccessary with CRT projectors and some others. Second, I cannot control custom refresh rates either in Vista. I need to be able to select refresh rates to two decimal points. Previously I have used ATI cards which also do not have this control but by using Powerstrip, or riva tuner one can gain the control needed. In researching why the 8600gt is not supported by powerstrip, I have learned that NVIDIA or it's agents have refused to release the information that will allow support to powerstrip. Why is this the case and when will you see the light and release the info. I will need a resolution to this problem very soon or I will be forced to return to the ATI cards which are supported in powerstrip using Vista. I am not alone with this frustration, there are hundreds of people either waiting to see if support comes or will go to ATI. I think that it is very short sighted to withhold the information needed for Powerstrip support. I look forward to hearing from you and will pass on your response to the many hundreds of PC users waiting to select their hardware for thier HTPC,s.
Sincerely,
Larry Kelly

) but, am now hoping that the 8600M supports output of my panel's native res. It is an HDTV, BTW, 50" PDP by Vizio.
