Legally stole HD70

I just came back after TG vacation. Last Monday I went to local BB and was shocked to see its sale price of HD70 as $499.99 but its not in stock.

Called almost all stores in my state - fortunately one of the store had ONE hd70 in stock. I had to hurry to grab my toy. Havent opened the box yet. I am planning to build the screen.

Hd70 is one of my short-listed PJs - AX200, Z5, HD70, DT-500, HC1500, AW-15.

I too saw it in the Palm Beach Gardens BB for 499.99 last Wednesday.
Sounded like a steal to me too!!!
Was the sale in print? Don't see that price online.
It has been on clearance in some states. It's suppose to be on clearance in all the country by the end of February, that's what I read on FW.
Thanks I guess ill stop in after work and check.

Mike
Yep thats the price I see also here.
HD70s seem to be in short supply. I am assuming now is the time to get one. Are they still making new ones?

HolyHD,

What state are you in?

Thanks.

I live in New Jersey.

I tried almost all stores in my state but only ONE store had it and I have grabbed it. Their system would show available but that would be the display (non-working) item. I wasted lot of time to see a display item which obviously cannot be bought.

Based on the store guy, BB discontinued HD70. Also, every store had it in clearance (valid 11/19-11/23) but in different price - $499.99 - $899.99.

Only other store which had is circuit city for $799 after $200 rebate from Optoma.

No. Its on clearance price in local stores. Online will show as $999.99 and the online cust service people will not be able to very local store price. If they could, BB will anyway not price match on clearance items.

Yeah checked on it after work, still has it listed at $999 as is per the CS rep,oh well I will wait and watch.
I think the supply of HD70s is dwindling. I got mine at CC last week and it was the last one in the CC stores in the Houston area and there are zero in the Dallas/Fort Worth CC stores. Seems like people are grabbing these up, maybe because the rebate is ending?
I went to BB on BF and they didn't have it in stock. The guy there said he can order one for me.

HolyHD,

You are my IDOL!!

Let me tell you my story. I am a long time HT fan, I started with a 27" Toshiba set, stereo speakers and a S-VHS VCR in an apartment back in the mid 90s. I moved into my first house in 1999 and I eventually graduated to 5.1 surround and a 55" HDTV set in 2000. In 2005 I moved into a bigger house with a dedicated 30' X 18' theater room. It was time for a projector!!!

Bam! I lost my job of some 11 years, got divorced and eventualy moved to sunny Southern California about 6 months ago. Back to a small apartment! :-( Anyway, I still had visions of a projector filling my tiny place and I had been eyeballing the HD70 or the Mits HC1500. The 1500 was on sale online for a low $749 and I was just about to pull the plug on it yesterday...until I read your post!

So low and behold I travelled in excess of 85 miles within a 1 1/2 hour time frame, went to 4 different Best Buys and I am now the proud owner of a ridiculously priced HD70!

Thanks to you sir!

Although I don't have a screen yet (or mount, or cables), I had to see what this puppy looked like. I ran component cable from the Xbox 360 to it (via an RCA coupler) and OH MY GOODNESS!!!! Amazed, on just a white wall, the image was to die for. I even have that pseudo stucko finish on my interior walls and I was truly in awe of what this little projector can do. Xbox images were sent at 1080p, games were amazing, HD video was amazing, and HD-DVD was amazing (at 1080i). Hell even DVDs looked good. I then hooked it up to my Sony HD-DVR and was still drooling.

I can't wait to set it up properly with a ceiling mount and screen and get it calibrated. I can't wait until the next eye opening experience, 1080p anybody! LOL

That's what the online community is all about and again my hats off to you!

Does anyone have a receipt scan they could post? We could always TRY and get a price match... It's worth a try
post #19 of 109
Bluto,

You don't need a receipt scan, the $499 price reflects in their system. It would be up to them to honor the price because as mentioned not all the stores are closing them out.

I would fight/would have fought if they didn't do it at $499. Mine rang up no problems.

The sales person I asked at the first BB did confirm the close out price, so it's not like they don't know. :-)

My Bestbuy has one in stock and the guy shows the other BestBuy stores in the area (out of stock) selling it for $499 but the one that has it still has it for $999 can they not price match there own stores? damnit. The supervisor is going to call me back now cause apprently hes the only one who can figure it out. I really hope I get somewhere cause I could really use this PJ for this price :<.
My two local BB's were out of them as well but still listed at $999.

Have you seen the HC1500 and the HD70 in a comparo? I was going to go with the HD70 but when I saw them the HC1500 was much brighter had truer color and was a bit sharper.

Do you think it was just the demo examples at BB?

Skywlkr,

There is a Best Buy that has both of them set up on a 92ish inch screen. On the setup they had after I tweaked both of them considerably, I saw no difference that I could detect on the overall image. I don't think they had it mated to the best screen possible (some unknown gray screen material with some hot spotting) but overall both threw a good image. I realize that the signal is probably split to hell and back but like I said both had a nice image with both DTV and BD.

I know the Mits is newer, brighter, etc which is the reason I was considering it. But to me, the dollar tradeoff is significant enough for me to go with the HD70. If I hadn't caught the HD70 on sale, I'd be the owner of a 1500.

Glat to know that you could get one at steal price.

Enjoy your HD.

Did you buy screen yet. Are you planning to build one or use dry wall ?

just got back from my local bb in phoenix, talked to the floor manager,he went to the "local" best buy kiosk web site and it is avail for 499,no shipping costs.just for fun he went to the national site and it lists for 999.so if you want one of these you must go to you local bb talk to someone and ask to order one on line using there computer and tell them to go to the local online site.the site lookks the same as the national site but the price is 499.he said it should be this way at all bb in the usa.by the way i copied the web address and tried at home and was not able to do this.good luck and have a merry christmas!!!!
I plan on going over to BB tomorrow to try and pick one up.

Any chance you can offer more information/details/specifics on how to get the 499 deal?

I'll ask about the local kiosk site, but I'd like to have a better grip on the jargon/lingo before I go in there and sound like an a$$ (although, that has NEVER stopped me before!).
bluto it states on the top of the printed reciet,"this kiosk displays in store prices, which may be differ from national internet prices" so look for that, also was on another site tonite,cc will pricematch if you get the paid pw from bb and guess what there is a 200 dollar rebate only at cc so it will be 299!!!!,i cannot prove this but i will go there first thing wed to try this.this is only getting better,i got the toshiba a2 hd dvd from sears for 84 dollars from a one day price match from the walmart one day sale a while ago,so if this works out 383$ for a hddvd and hd projector in the last 3 weeks!wow!

Sorry to break the ice.

1. Per Online representative they will not be able to see local stores sale prices (I am not sure if its true but I cannot disprove either).
2. Not all store has same clearance price. In New Jersey, just in 3 stores in central jersey, prices were $499, $599, $699 (it appears to be in some kind of sequence but its the reality). Some stores in North jersey had it for $899. But none of them had one in store. They initially said only one is available and when I went there, none but still their system shows that one available and they said it may be due to display item (non-working) which they cannot sell.
3. As HD70 is discontinued product in BB, they will not be able to place an order for you.

BUT just dont stop going to your local BB. Try your luck. You may find one.

I tried this trick earlier. CC will not price match because you will not be able to show any BB advertisement AND its a clearance item.

Earlier CC had sale for $799 AFTER $200 rebate. Now, per CC website, $979.99 - 10% off with instore pickup ($97.99) - Optoma $200 rebate = final price of $681 PLUS any sales tax you paid on $979.

Wow,

Just received my first scare with a 2 day old projector. I was catching up on some family guy last night and the PJ just cut off out of the blue! I glanced over to see if I could make out the light status on the top panel then the PJ just cut off completly. I hit the off button twice and unplugged it for a minute or two. Seemed to be fine for the duration of my viewing.

I was only watching for like 45 mins when this happened so I'm sure it wasn't a heat problem. I have the PJ on the original box on top of my theater sectional and venting properly.

Freaked me out!

Isn't the HD32 the same as the HD70?

CC has the HD32 for $600 after 10% off coupon.
