with the D* boxes you can pick among 3 outputs-native, 720p, or 1080i. in my experience none of the above will improve SD PQ to any great degree.
I switched to FiOS in July & SD PQ improved markedly. not completely across the board but chs like Fox Soccer, BBC-Am, CNN, History look amazing compared to what they were over D*. HD PQ is also SLIGHTLY improved.
now the FiOS HD boxes do not have a native setting. for best SD PQ you want to set the box at 4:3 Override @ 480i. HD res can be set at 720p or 1080i.
