Fine. No complaints.

However, I've only been using the Venturer for HD DVDs (and not that many as it's not my primary TV). For DVDs I've usually been using a different player, because that player is region free and it's much faster at startup.

So, I don't know if there are DVD incompatibilities or not. I do know that my Toshiba HD-A2 has had a few issues with DVDs, even though it has worked great with HD DVD. The main issue I've had with DVD on my A2 is the picture locking up once in a while if I skip back and forth too much. I've had to power off to get things back to normal. (If I just let the DVD play normally, it always works fine. I've not had an incompatible DVD yet with my A2.) I don't remember getting this on the Venturer, but like I said, I generally do not use the Venturer for DVD.

BTW, the configuration menus for the Venturer look basically identical to my A2. This is not surprising, as the Venturer is just the A3 with a different shell.

EDIT:

Well, I do have one complaint, even for HD DVD playback. I find the fan a little loud. Usually it's not a problem because I have the volume turned up anyway. However, I notice it when I turn down the volume if people are sleeping nearby or whatever.

WTH, I bit. I needed a backup DVD player anyway, wonder how the upscaling will be compared to my old Oppo 970.

I thought this was a rebadged A3, not A2. The A2 has the same power supply and drive as the XA2, but the A3 does not.

Why in the world would anyone buy a player for a dead format?... The Player is worth nothing! You basically threw away $200.00

Correct, the Venturer is an A3.

Now is a great time for someone that has not jumped in, to get into HD for pennies on the dollar. Only a couple more new releases coming up, yet someone can experience a grand time and save themselves big bucks compared to what us early adopters shelled out for players and discs.

You mean you guys didn't know? At midnight on October 1, 2008, all HD-DVD players will turn into pumpkins, and every existing HD-DVD disc will spontaneously combust. I can't believe you idiots wasted your money!

3 pumkins for me/I just need to hide them from the wife/LOL

PS/ Says shipped in the 4th. No way!
etp, hiding them from the wife? That might be tough. Three of them. That msut give you a nice feeling of security for down the road. Besides, if your wife finds out just show her how much a good up converter costs and she will be happy she found a bargain hunter to marry.

Just picked this up for all the movies that havent been released on blu-ray yet. Quick noob question: I have a brand new Onkyo 6100 7.1 system. Should I set the audio output (HDMI) to "Auto" or "PCM"? My understanding is that on "Auto" it lets the receiver decode the audio and on "PCM" the player decodes it before outputting. Will it make a difference either way (i.e. will the reciever do a better job of decoding the audio)?

Where did you get it from???
