Yup.

We have no plans to have Venturer in our stores this holiday, Wal-Mart merchandise spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien said. We will continue to offer the best values on popular HD DVD and Blu-ray products from leading consumer brands like Sony, Samsung, Philips, Toshiba and RCA.

Anyone know why there are two numbers separated by a slash?

As products get more advanced it is becoming common that they will start to have multiple/seperate devices inside which each have thier own firmware.

It looks like one part of the system had an update and another is still on the original firmware.

maybe a video/audio breakdown. Maybe 1 is HD DVD components and the other is the upscaling chipset?

First number is allways mainboard firmware, second one is drive firmware.

So mainboard was updated, drive not.

Hey, when they said that they had "no plans". Now they have plans!

I struck gold today at lunchtime! The Walmart in Scarborough Town Centre had 5 (now 4 since I bought one) of these Venturer players in stock! I haven't had a chance to even open the box yet to see what movies I got free....I'll post my initial impressions of the player this evening when I get to hook it up.

Contrary to rumors and speculations that Walmart will not be selling the Venturer HD DVD players, Walmart has just started selling them in store, and online.

Wal-Mart Now Selling $199 Venturer HD DVD Player
But Toshiba beat the company to the punch with its new low price.
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (November 28, 2007) -- Wal-Mart has started selling Venturer Electronics' new HD DVD player for $199.98 online and at selected stores.

For months, the HDTV industry has buzzed about a low-cost HD DVD player from China that could give HD DVD a major advantage against Blu-ray in the high-def disc format war.

HD DVD boosters predicted that the player would be available at Wal-Mart, which would drive interest among the masses.

Venturer is based in Ontario, Canada, but has a manufacturing partner in China.

Ironically, though, the launch of the Venturer player is somewhat anti-climatic with entry-level Toshiba players now available at some stores for under $200.

The Venturer SHD7000 features 1080i output with a HDMI connection and an Ethernet port for downloads of special features.

The lowest-priced Blu-ray player is now Sony's BDP-S300 at $499 suggested retail, although Wal-Mart is now selling it for $348.

Meanwhile, over at Target, the Venturer is still listed as "coming in 2 to 6 weeks", online only, and a bargain at $249. LOL.

Depending on the amount of stock Venturer actually had available to ship, this could make a decent impact in numbers by year end. CES 2008 gets ever more interesting by the hour.

This is going to drive me crazy ... Venturer. Please, and thank you.

It's essentially a near clone Toshiba HD-A3 from a second tier manufacturer. If Wal-Mart is confident it's "good enough", so am I.

Speaking of Target, I work for said store and we recently put up the Blu Ray display on a front end cap. We are selling the 300 series sony blu ray player...is it BDS300? Cant remember...anyway, havent sold a single one yet. I think 400 bucks for a DVD player when just down the aisle you can get ones for 25-50, or 80-120 for "up converters" in retail stores like Target is an impossible sale to people no matter how good it looks. The 200 dollar price point of HD DVD players like the Venturer is much more reasonable to people...I think this will have a huge impact! Software be darned, if the player costs half as much it is the one people will buy!

I just got back from my local Walmart (Kanata, ON). Last night they had none and had no idea when/if they were getting some, now they have 5.

Correct.
People would buy a cheap player, then wait for the movie prices to tapper down; Not vice versa.

They need to drop the Venturer to around $129. Who's gonna buy it at $199?

Nice bundle...2 WB titles

Same functionality, major retailer, lower price ... SOLD.

That's how house brand crackers give Ritz a run for it's money. It's 39 cents cheaper. Who would buy those? Just because it has the Grocer's name on it ....

Is the Venturer that cheap Chinese player that Walmart claimed was not in their marketing plan?

I agree.
Besy Buy still had over 3/4(about 100 units ) of their A3 stack this week, which were priced at $199 over the weekend.

I still believe that the disc prices need to drop to really make the general public buy in to HDM.

I still can't figure out why the player prices dropped over the BF weekend but there were zero HDM disc sales/price drops.
