calibration dvd

Thread Starter
I just purchased a Sharp Aquos LC46D43U.

I've read that some units are fine right out of the box, but others need calibration. I've also read about DVDs that can help in this regard. Is there a specific DVD someone can recommend for the unit I'm purchasing? Where would be the best place to purchase?

I know nothing about any of this so any help would be great!

Thanks!!

I'd also like to know about any LCD specific DVDs. The other question is do any stores rent these things? Blockbuster does not so I assume no one does.

Check out Get Gray in the Calibration section. You download it and burn it to a DVD - not free but reasonable. Does some basic calibration setups - brightness, contrast, color and tint. Can/will do more if you buy a colorimeter. There are others. THX is included on many DVDs such as Star Wars, Cars, Toy Story, etc. All require some BLUE tinted glasses - can be bought from THX for a few bucks.

I did exactly this on my 42" and 52" Vizio 1080p sets. You certainly notice a difference when you are done, even with an amateur calibration. The steps are easy to follow and take no more than 1 hour the first time through.

Also, download for free the TVBlink DVD. Not for calibration, but for checking for panel defects: bright or dark pixels, uniformity, sharpness and the dreaded Sharp banding.
