STR-DG910 - no audio over HDMI

I just got a STR-DG910 and can't seem to get it to pick up audio via HDMI from either a PS3 or Moto U-verse STB.

PS3 is connected to the V2/BD HDMI input on the STR-DG910, and HDMI out is connected to DVI2 (HDCP) on a LVM-42w2.

Video comes through perfectly, but no audio. Any thoughts? I talked to Sony support but they only read basic scripted questions then said it was defective... I don't think exchanging it is going to make a difference, so I may just pick up a TX-SR605 instead if I can't get it working.

There have been issues if your display is DVI. I don't think it is going to work for you.

The DVI is telling the HDMI that there is no audio support.

That's what I was wondering, but I couldn't find anything indicating this for sure and I thought the receiver should take care of it.

Think it will be any different with the TX-SR605?

This shouldn't be the case if you are getting video out of the receiver then it's not an HDCP issue and the receiver should be getting the audio when it hits the monitor. I have about 15 AV sources with no issues to a DVI display. Can you check your setup to make sure the sources are AUTO or not set to look only for analog audio or coax/SPDIF.

It should work with both, unless you have a non-HDCP compliant display. You'll probably be happier with a 605, but HDMI audio shouldn't be the deciding factor.

I have read some posts here about it. Just becuase it works with your DVI display does not mean it will work with all of them.

The to DVI issue and no audio has definetly come up for people. there may have been an FW fix on some AVR's for this if I rememeber correctly.

Yeah, I tried both the AUTO setting and HDMI setting.

Interestingly though, if I set it to AUTO then hook the PS3 or STB up via SPDIF it doesn't go to SPDIF, but it works fine if I manually set it to SPDIF/OPT. This leads me to believe the receiver is getting some sort of audio info from the PS3/STB and is still trying to take audio from HDMI (preferring it over SPDIF).

I ended up deciding to exchange the STR-DG910 for a TX-SR605, but when I got to CC I looked around and saw a clearance AVR-887 for $349, so I got it.

The Denon works perfectly with the same setup (PS3 -> (HDMI-HDMI) -> Receiver -> (HDMI-DVI) -> Display) for everything except my Moto DVR (U-verse) -- which the AVR seems to have some weird sync issue with that doesn't occur when the DVR is hooked up directly to the display. Power cycling the AVR clears up the issue until I change sources.

So... now I'm left trying to decide if the sync issue (plus the slight pull of truehd/dts-ma) is worth trying the TX-SR605. Any thoughts?

I am soooo thankfull after being in HDMI switching hell for a few months, that my salvation AVR has been good with all the sources that I have thrown at it over the past year.

I feel for people in HDMI swtching hell to this very day.

Doesn't the Denon have an audio delay/lip sync setting. BTW why were you connecting the DG910 to the LVM-42W2 over DVI and not the HDMI? The LVM-42W2s are notorious for having issues with one of their DVI ports, I have an LVM-42W2 but I forget which port it is but one of the DVI ports won't accept 1080p.

I think I assertained his HDMI was tied up with other duties.

Sorry, by sync I was referring to what I think is a video sync issue (only parts of video is displayed w/ large horizontal black bars appear until resetting the AVR; sometimes followed by snow/black/snow flashes).

I'm connecting to DVI2 on the LVM-42w2 because I can only get 1080i over the HDMI port; Westinghouse says the revision I have doesn't support 1080p over HDMI...

Even though the OP has since solved the problem...

I don't think the DVI had much if anything to do with the problem. Since the PS3 was connected to a receiver HDMI input, in theory shouldn't one be able to hear the audio anyway even if no display device is connected (even just for diagnostic purposes or to take DVI out of the equation) ?

Perhaps this receiver model doesn't support audio over HDMI much like the Onkyo TX-SR505. The receiver seems the more likely culprit given the other components the OP has mentioned.

The DG910 absolutely does support audio over HDMI.
