I own the 5 disc Special Edition from France, and if the PQ is anything to go off of, you guys are in for an amazing treat

(The current import doesn't have any english- but I will be importing the UK version as well as buying the domestic release... yes, I am insane about this flick.)

I finally bought the SD 2-disc at Best Buy yesterday for $7.99 and it comes with a ticket to the Golden Compass. I was patiently waiting for Pan's jump to HD-DVD but I couldn't pass up this offer.

Now I can wait while watching the SD version without any consequence. The SD seems a little soft in places but overall it still looks wonderful upconverted. CANNOT wait for HD.

The way that info is presented can be somewhat misleading since they lump the whole PIP visual commentary in under the HD-DVD exclusive section. The two features that are specified as "HD-DVD Only" are exclusive, but the Blu-Ray version does have the visual commentary. Whether or not it's presented via another encode/branching or if it will only be usable on players equipped with Profile 1.1 is another matter....

I am really looking forward to seeing this in HD. i have a B.A. in spanish literature and history. i have a copy in sd and before i got a chance to watch it i learned of the hd release on the 26th and decided to not watch it till i can see it in hd. the sd release got tons of great review for sound and pq. i can't wait for this one.

I'm pretty much set on buying this on HDDVD vs BLu because I can get DTSHDMA off of my XA2 but so far not from my PS3! So firmware 2.7 has won an HDDVD purchase out of my blu-favoured wallet!

I pre-ordered mine from WHV with the 25% off coupon code. The DTS-HD MA will sound so sweet on my new Denon 3808 which should arrive next week!
i'm ordering this on hd dvd because i finally want to see my a35 throw out some bitstream dts-hd ma as I've already seen blu ray do it... yes, i'm just that silly

this disc is a RARE case where extras really matter to me. Incredible film.

HD DVD version is mine!

You will love that receiver. All I can say is awesome.

The French version had the black levels set too high. Hopefully it will be fixed for this release.

Same here (89 & some change). The SD version looked very, very good on my 60XBR2. The HD version should be screaming good.

Damn, this is a hard choice. I want the extra features found on the HD DVD, but I know my HD-A2 does not support DTS HD MA. So until seeing these extra features it was a Blu purchase, because the PS3 will eventually be able to decode DTS HD MA. Now I see the features and don't know which to get.

For the record I do not even have an HDMI receiver yet, I'm just planning for the future.

I will be the lone dissenter since I could not stand the green push in the film and so will not be buying this film in either SD, HD or BD.

Your're not the lone disenter here anymore, lol.I saw the fiilm in the theater and while it's visually superb, i didn't care for the movie all that much.Unfortunately being visually stunning isn't reason enough for me to preorder the HD-DVD.

It might interest folks to know that I contacted the UK producer, Optimum, about their BD and HD-DVDs of Pan's Labyrinth. I asked:

Quote:

I have a couple of quick questions as one who is interested in purchasing a copy of your newly released Pan's Labyrinth in high-def. I'm trying (a) to decide whether I want your UK version or the US version on Blu-Ray as I notice this title is being released on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD in the US in December by New Line. Would your release be using a separate encode or is it the same as the New Line version? I'm (b) also trying to decide whether I want this on Blu-Ray at all or on HD-DVD as I own both formats. I notice to this effect that you also have Pan's Labyrinth coming out on HD-DVD in December. Will that be using the same encode as your Blu-Ray version? Also are there any differences in the extras between your Blu-Ray and HD-DVD versions because the US New Line HD-DVD will have several web enabled features that their Blu-Ray version will not have.

So is it the UK Blu-Ray or HD-DVD version of Pan's that I want or the US Blu-Ray or HD-DVD version? It all sounds really complicated! I suppose it is!

Optimum replied:

Quote:

The UK and US versions will be different as we have created this separately from New Line.

The Blu Ray and the HD DVD are different encodes.

The extra features on both Blu ray and HD DVD are the same on the UK version, including the Easter Egg.

I heard from the guy who runs a Blu-Ray region code site that the bit rate of the Optimum Blu-Ray Pan's Labyrinth is often as much as 38-39 and that the PQ is reportedly very good indeed. However a review here comments that the PQ is often soft though 'acceptable'. It doesn't exactly inspire with confidence. I think I'm inclined now to wait until the US HD-DVD of Pan's Labyrinth comes out with all those extra features on. Would be interested in your comments...

Anyway, does anyone know if there's a possibility that New Line may use the THX-Certified HD transfer taken from the French HD DVD-exclusive release? That version is reportedly pretty good based on a few reviews I read months ago, although there aren't any bonus materials on that disc, except for the commentary.

DTS-HD Master Audio.

Aight, aight.

I really enjoyed this movie and it's a buy for me. I found the SD picture outstanding, even on my FP system, so this one should be impressive.

Was this on the DVD or in a theater? What I mean is, was it a choice by the director or a mastering decision you had issue with? I didn't notice anything, but I wasn't looking for it.

Neither did I. I also found the SD PQ to be top shelf and that upped my anticipation for the HD version. Isn't this supposed to have 7.1 surround sound?

Well, considering that he's sitting 10' from a 42" TV, doesn't exactly inspire alot of confidence either.

Will the A2 send the DTS HD-MA as 1.5 mbps core like my Sharp blu-ray player does? I'll definitely pick it up on HD DVD if that's the case.
