I am looking to buy a new 5/1 or 7/1 receiver. What features should I be looking for to get the best sound?

If you are looking for a receiver to use with HD DVD, you should look for a minimum of HDMI 1.1 capable of processing 7.1 channel LPCM. If the receiver has HDMI audio, it is a good bet that it can do LPCM. Stay away from video "pass thru" receivers, they are for HDMI video switching only and won't do audio. If you really want to be future proof, look for DD+/TrueHD/DTS-HD decoding. This feature is not required to get HD audio from HD DVD players, but who knows what the future brings. List you budget and we can make some suggestions.

GREAT START! I am looking at $300-600. I will more than likely start with a 5/1 st up. What do I look for to get one capable of processing 7.1 channel LPCM? Each feature list shows what audio it supports. What does DD+/TrueHD/DTS-HD decoding do for me if I use a Toshiba A2 say?

What is the minimum Audio features I need supported by todays players (like A2)?

I can get last years model of receivers that do not have DD+/TrueHD/DTS-HD decoding but do have HDMI for less money.

The A2 only requires HDMI 1.1 audio processing, it does not need DD+/TrueHD/DTS-HD decoding. In that budget, take a look at the Sony STR-DG910 7.1, Panasonic SAXR57K, the Onkyo 604. More suggestions should be found in the Receivers forum (they know much more about this stuff than me). Personally, I bought the Onkyo 605. For $400 (on sale) I got HDMI 1.3 and DD+/TrueHD/DTS-HD decoding with good power and reliability. There are some quirks (no ability to derive 7.1 from 5.1 PCM sources), but I only have 5.1, so it doesn't matter. Most feel it is one of the best bangs for the buck around.

This is a good summary of what is available.

If you intend on setting up a 7.1 system, make sure that your reciever can matrix a 5.1 LPCM signal! I am looking to upgrade to an Onkyo 705 because my 605 cannot do this (and also because the 705 has 3 HDMI inputs and pre-outs).
