HDMI cable lenth

Long story short...

Originally needed 100ft of HDMI cable to go throught the walls and attic. After running the cable, found a better route through the attic that I didn't see when I originally laid out my plans, and saved myself some lenth.

I have 100ft of HDMI cable, would I bennifit from getting a 75 footer? Is the video quality going to diminish with that extra 25ft that I don't need now?

Thanks!
Nick

I'm thinking either length is way too long.

Ok, so how do I get an HDMI conection to an HDMI conection, and run it through the walls and ceiling from the back of the room to the front?

Ok, I'm not too educated on all of this stuff. Can you give me a link to where I can fin a repeater? Maybe a little more info on it?

Thanks!

Ok, I found out the info I needed on the repeater through a quick internet search. Don't know why I didn't figure this out before hand.

Now, what is a good repeater? There are quite a few of them out there. Which one to buy?

I would be able to find just as much out as you would just by googling or searching these forums.

If you already have a 100ft HDMI cable, just a repeater probably won't help. Ideally the repeater needs to go inline about half the distance. There are amplified HDMI cables you can buy that go up to 200ft. Or you can use a fiber optic or CAT5 cable solution.

The crux of the issue is, does it work now?

Admittedly, a 100ft HDMI cable (where the heck did you find one that long in the first place?) would seem prohibitively long. That said, digital is pretty much an all-or-none proposition, and the connection "dropping bits" will be obvious in the form of "sparkles" and other image anomalies on your display.

In general, the longer the cable, the larger the conductors have to be to prevent excessive reduction in signal strength (attenuation). From what I've read, 10m (~33ft) seems to be widely considered HDMI's unofficial maximum length, though it really depends on the cable's construction, the strength of the source output, and the ability of the receiver to process an over-attenuated signal to recover a clean data stream.*

IMHO, if it's working for your particular equipment configuration, count your blessings and go with it. But bear in mind that you may not be so lucky with different equipment in the future.

[edit]

* Also, it depends on "how hard you're pushing" it, i.e. the cable may successfully pass 720p at 60Hz, but fail at anything higher.

Thanks guys.

BobRob-I am in the process of moving all of my equiptment to a closet. Right now, I am running all of the cables. I bought the 100' HDMI cable from monoprice.

All of my components were in the typical location, beside the TV, in the front of the room. I wanted a "cleaner" look, and decided to move everything into a closet, and out of sight. This required me to route everything through the walls and ceiling.....hence the 100' cable. I just ran everything last night, and have not had a chance to fire it all up yet.

I found a local company(that is also open today), that has the HDMI cable in the lenth I need, with a repeater already build in it. Price is $119.95, and I think I'm gonna go ahead and get it so there are no problems when I do fire everything up. The initial wiring was tough, but feeding this HDMI cable won't be too big of a hassle because I can just feed it through as I take the other one out(at least this sounds good in therory).

Thanks for all the help guys! I would have been severly frustrated if I got everything hooked up and it didn't perform the way I wanted it to. My HT has been down for 3 weeks now, I'm going through movie withdraws!!!!

Regardless of which cable you ultimately decide to go with, it would be to your benefit you to connect it up first before you install it, and try it out at the highest resolution and frame rate you plan to use, just to make sure. Good luck!
