Pioneer 815, no bass with big speakers...

Hello, it has been driving me nuts lately with my Pioneer 815 receiver that I purchased about two years ago. I am currently using as a 5.1 system with Athena Speakers and an Athena 10" subwoofer.

When I do the auto sound setup with the Mic, it sets my front speakers up as big speakers because I have the tower speakers as my front speakers and my receiver no longer seems to use to the subwoofer at all.

If I manually go in and tell my receiver that I have small front speakers, my receiver will start to use my subwoofer again.

Does anyone know why this is happening? When it comes to knowledge and configuration of audio systems, it stops at the capabilities of wiring. I would like to learn more but I have no idea where to start and need help with this issue heh.

Your subwoofer does two things. It plays the LFE channel, the .1 in 5.1 or 7.1, and it also plays the lowest bass for any speakers that are set to small. With your fronts set to Large, your subwoofer will still do its thing for the special effects in movie tracks and the LFE in 5.1 music like SACD or DVD-Audio, but it won't do anything if you're listening to a stereo source because nothing gets redirected from the FL and FR.

If you are going to run your Athena mains as "Large" and want the subwoofer to be used in all modes, all the time, you need to set the subwoofer to "Plus" in your 815. This setting change is acheived in the manual speaker settings menu of the receiver. When the fronts are "Large" and the sub is simply set to "Yes" (as is common after running the MCACC auto set-up), the subwoofer will only come to life when an LFE signal is present from a Dolby Digital or dts 5.1 audio stream.

Hope this helps and happy listening.
