Onkyo DV-HD805 - First End User Reports! - Page 51

I have a European 805. Which European model equates to the North American XA2, please?

Joerod, your courage and unabashed nothing-to-it-but-to-do-it outlook is truly commendable. By taking that leap of faith, you've answered the pivotal question of the thread, apparently putting it to rest once and for all. Ballsy move, man...and thanks!

Chris, it will take Onkyo a long while to get caught up. I mean a long while...

Thanks BasicBlak! I will admit it was a loooong 12 minute update... I was sweating.
The player is still operating perfectly fine. I just tested August Rush and Elizabeth.... Hell, I may test all of my HD DVDs before long.

Anyone else do it yet?

I can now say I have put in about 75 of my discs to make sure they all load and play. When I get back this afternoon I plan to try another 50. After that I will declare victory!

I'll do it if someone will send me an official Toshiba 4.0 cd. (I'll pay you for it)

I have one but it is for an A35 and you need one for a XA2 I think...

I haven't decided whether to upgrade my XA2 or 805 yet, so don't want to give up the original disc, but I can make a copy of my official 4.0 CD if you want. PM me your address if interested.

I'll do my Integra if you will send me the backup firmware if mine bricks.
I'm still on the factory firmware.

Joe, I would also like a copy of the backup FW (I'm also still on 2.6). This is fantastic! Right now, I have no reason to upgrade to 4.0 anyway (I am limited to 1080i... no 1080p/24 yet), but when I do upgrade my display...

Anyone can get a firmware disc from Onkyo to have as a backup. I can't send my 3.? out. I think Onkyo was sending out 2.8 or 3.0 last I knew. My point is if you can get a disc from them to use as a backup then you should be good.

For the record, I used an official Toshiba 4.0 disc to update my unit. Not sure if there is a difference from the online one or not. I doubt it though...

I thought the only FW update from Onkyo was 2.8. They sent out a 3.0 update as well?

From what I understand from Toshiba's updates, you cannot regress FW version, unless you have a hacked copy. Am I to understand that if my Onkyo doesn't like the XA2 4.0 for whatever reason, i can go back to 2.8 (or whatever) by simply "downgrading" via the regular FW update process?
Now that I cannot verify. I wasn't planning to go back if I did not like it. I was only planning to fix a bricked player if needed. If it did brick then I was going to correct it with an onkyo firmware. I was told it would work if the worst happened by installing the toshiba 4.0 disc...

That's what I am confused about. If the player were to "brick", how would the FW update be applied in the first place? I am assuming that "brick" means that the player is completely unresponsive (can't eject the tray, etc)...

BTW, I cannot thank you enough, first for recommending this player (which i absolutely love), and then for giving us hope that the Tosh 4.0 update works for us as well. Here's hoping that the rest of your testing goes without a hitch!

I should clarify. I shouldn't say bricked. You are right, brick means completely off without powering on. I mean if it messes up where there would be no menu or gui and or disc recognition. If it went to that condition after loading the Toshiba 4.0 disc I was told if I re loaded an official onkyo disc it would resort back to normal. Good thing I did not have to worry about that. I am liking the performance of 4.0 so I have no plans to put it back to the normal Onkyo software (disc)... I am heading down now (just got in) to resume testing HD DVDs...

Thanks! I do have an official Onkyo 2.8 disc (that I never loaded), so I am covered on that front. I'm probably not going to update until I have need to do so (i.e. I get a 1080p/24 display, and need to get rid of the AVC jaggies), but I called Toshiba anyway and requested a XA2 4.0 upgrade disc ...
If you ever need to then you are all set.

Anyone want to sell your hd805 yet? Please drop me a line.

Have you tried any SD's? Notice any difference?
Haven't tried SD dvd. I usually use either my SP1000 or Denon 3800 for SD dvds. I will try one now. I just spent another hour testing about 25 more HD DVDs. So far still good...
Another thanks for being the guinea pig Joe.

So far no problems is good news.
I updated my Integra DHS 8.8 to 4.0 with no problems. So far playing very good. I downloaded version 4.0 from Toshiba and then copied to CD, works great. Try it you might like it!

I'm running firmware version 2.6 and haven't noticed any jaggies at 1080p/24. I thought the jaggies only popped up with firmware 2.8 and up? If I saw jaggies, I'd give firmware 4.0 a go, but right now I don't see a compelling reason to try the Toshiba 4.0 firmware. Am I way off base here?
Checked 180 discs as of now and still working fine. I also loaded 10 SD dvds... I say 4.0 is safe... This firmware is clean!

That's a good question... if the jaggies thing just popped up with FW 2.8, does 4.0 do anything other than fix the stuff that 2.8 broke in the first place?
Aw feck it, I'm going for it right now. I'll keep you posted (my player says "VERUP" on its display as I type this)...
Just select YES and you should be good...
