"I upgraded my XE1/XA2 with Toshiba firmware which I then tried on my

I sent it to Genserve who are Onkyo's national service agent for the
UK. They had to replace the main circuit board at a cost of $200.
They also told me in no uncertain terms that Onkyo's firmware is their
own (despite similarities to Toshiba) and that the Toshiba firmware
had blown the circuit board.
Incidentally, I have always had a 'Premium Digital' symbol follow the
welcome screen ever since I have owned the player which has always
been on Firmware 2.8..."
Personally, not sure how a firmware update could fry a circuit board, but there you have it.
Glad it seems to be working with 4.0.
