The version in the update screen does indeed show 4.0, and the only difference from Toshiba's update instructions was the fact that the ON/STANDBY light did not flash between red and blue (it stayed blue the whole time during STEP 5/5). The true test will be tonight with Transformers... wish me luck...

Woo Hoo! The update appears to have taken perfectly. I don't know if it is placebo (probably is), but the 1080i picture seems a bit tighter, with a bit more depth to it. The main thing I am hoping for at this point is stability, as opposed to 1080p/24 (I am currently limited to 1080i). Count me as a happy camper! Thanx for the encouragement, guys!

I can't believe it worked!

Got a question here. When using the hd805 as an upscaling dvd player, what settings do you have the video set to? Do you let it output at 1080/24 as well, just like hd dvds?

bump

I do not. I set it to output 1080p/60 and then go to the picture option where I have it set up for SD dvds.

We used the HD805 quite a bit over the last week. It is nice to know it still plays great looking extinct format titles...

And I almost forgot how great Riddick looks...

Thanks for the tip, Cal. Is this based on any particular info, or just the wisdom of better-safe-than-sorry? I am tempted to give it a shot, but could just stick with my SD PAL player if trouble will be afoot.

joerod, did you buy death proof on HD from germany? just to have one more title added to your collection? I am looking forward for my copy to arrive. I loved the movie. much better than planet terror IMHO.

You just read my mind. I ordered it to and I agree with you...

Where did you guys order the import Death Proof HD DVD from? I'd like to grab a copy myself.
I did from the amazon.de marketplace.

Hi guys. I need an Onkyo firmware disc, preferrably 2.8.
I have called Onkyo three times with no response to my request, and I also sent them an email request to send me one, but I still have heard nothing back from them. With my luck it probably won't come for 2 months.

If someone has one that they'd be willing to send me, I will pay to have it shipped quickly. OR, if anyone knows how to convert it to an ISO format, then email it to me, I can burn it myself.
If anyone can help me, please let me know and thank you.

Why do you need it?

Tried to make my 805 region free. It didn't quite work out.
I need the cd to see if I can flash the 805 back to 805 fw.

What about the regular Toshiba copy that you used before?

It won't work now.

You should have asked me about that region free trick before you did it. I will see if I can get my hands on the Onkyo version. If the Toshiba is not working though it may not work either...

Hindsight my friend. I was sure that it would work since the Toshiba 4.0 did. Guess not .
Any help is mucho appreciated of course. Joerod to the rescue... again .

Apologies in advance for the lazy search post, but will the hd805 pass bitstream for advanced codecs AND decode the to PCM over HDMI?

My door/disc tray mechanism on my XA2 is losing motivation and I'm thinking about replacing it or at least having a capable back-up. Most of the HD DVD movies I pulled out for demos have been released on BD, and I'm trying to ignore the "sunk cost" argument ... I'm just not ready to let go just yet.
The DV-HD805 is basically the same player as the XA2. If the XA2 can do it, so can the 805. The only thing the 805 lacks is a PICTURE button on the remote. You could use a universal remote for that or keep useing the XA2 remote.
Just don't try to hack the firmware for the 805. I learned that the hard way.
You can load Toshiba's 4.0 fw on the 805, but if you do there's no going back.
Thus far, Onkyo has not released a fw equivilant to Toshiba's 4.0.

^^Thanks. The player must be getting nervous because it started behaving yesterday. I did have a visit from the "gorf" audio, but after a few resets it started decoding without any problems. I'll keep an eye out for a backup.
Is it better to run the audio through optical or analog with HK AVR-146?

Well, I just received my new HD805! I was nervous when it would show up that it would be a refurbished or used one being passed off as new. However, it appears to be new, so I'm pretty stoked so far!

Quick question, do you all recommend I put the XA2 firmware on? Or should I just hook up the ethernet cable and load the most recent Onkyo firmware? Is the XA2 a much better FW? Thanks all!

I'd be interested to know also. I have an Integra DHS 8.8 on it's way and I am wondering the same thing.

The concensus seems to be that the 4.0 firmware for the XA2 is the most superior, and quite a few people have put that on their 805 and are very happy with it.

Thanks Smarty. I have seen that but I had the exact same question as Brian.

I just updated the player with the Onkyo 2.8 FW via ethernet. I've only played a couple of films so far, but they look pretty good! I might wait and see about upgrading to the Toshiba FW. I'm just nervous since I do not know how I would go about getting the player serviced if it would need it.

I'm trying to find the picture button for adjusting the Reon chip. I know the Onkyo remote does not have it, but I programmed my Harmony 890 for the player today and there is a picture button. However, nothing happens when I push the button. Do you have to have a DVD currently playing to adjust this feature?

Where did you buy it?
