Good question? Further what is the future firmware upgrades supposed to fix? Some people have been complaining it needs one.

Thanks for checking SD layer changes Brad. Bummer. But kinda what I thought. I'll definitely be keeping my Denon 3930 for SD DVD's.

It seems as though you were not quoted the AVS Forum special price. The MAP is $800.

I have spent a lot more time now with the HD805 and my VW200 and have been very happy. My HD805 has not tripped once. Also last night we watched Catwoman (not my choice of course) and it looked excellent being scaled to 1080p/23.97 by the REON chip. Close ups looked near HD like! My Wife even asked me if this was one of those red or blue case discs.

Sure it wasn't

My Wife even asked me if this was one of those red or blue case discs.

LOL!

Glad to here its still going strong, can you give any more insight into what your firmware has improved over the XA2 and the everyday regular Onkyo 805!

Cool. My wife prefers the red cases

I will soon give more info. I just got a sheet on it. I still consider the HD805 a combination of the XA2 and a XA3...

Joerod,
When can we expect to get the 2.7 firmware like you have for download ? Thanks!
Mine is not 2.7.

I would expect it out sooner than later. I don't have an exact date but hopefully will soon... My contact is now on Christmas break so when she gets back I may know more...

I'd guess you don't break a secret if you tell us the version of your players FW

Don't know if that will help because the regular (non-joerod) 805s have a 2.6 firmware anyways, a number the XA2 never had. So the number is meaningless other than knowing its not 2.6!

Yes, that's exactly what I want to find out. If he does not have 2.5 or 2.7 then it must be something advanced (2.8).

I am playing Riddick HD DVD now and am even more amazed how great the picture looks! The HD805 definitely earned the starting spot in my HT lineup...
Joe, we just set one up in our home theater. This is the first DV HD805 I have every seen and it looks fantastic. But honestly, not sure if it's the very fine Napa cab I'm drinking or the new JVC HD100 that is delivering the absolutely best images I have ever seen.

I'd say it is a combination of both.

I am getting equal results pairing it up with the new Sony VW200!
Thats funny, I got crucified for saying that I thought my Integra 8.8 HD (same thing as the Onkyo) player performed better than the A-30 I had before. I was accused of overstating the performance to justify the extra money I spent. How dare I.

Anyway, I've got it running through an Epson Pro 1080p and it's stunning.

Join the team. I have heard it all here as well. Trust your eyes, those that have the equipment and are able to do timely side by side comparisons will note a difference. Of course that difference will vary depending on which display the end user has.
And I was most impressed with the HD805 last night while watching Riddick HD DVD!
I'll have to pic that one up, I really liked that movie the first time I saw it.

I watched Spiderman 3 last night in SD, the player does a great job with it. Horrible movie though, ugh. What were they thinking. Such a ripoff of the Superman movie (Superman 2 I think) where he turns evil. Tbh, they should have made the whole movie of Spidey acting like a prick w/ his black suit on, those were the best parts.

So joerod...you ready to spill the beans yet on the firmware info
post #81 of 1755
The you need to get Riddick HD DVD. It still holds up as reference material. I am using the scene when they just take over the planet. It starts with them walking on those moving steps. On a great display it is breathtaking! Seriously, it is definitely good eye candy and I am just not talking about Thandie Newton.

Yeah, she's a hot little minx isn't she.

Joe, which scene is the best for my Onkyo DV HD805 and JVC HD100 store demo? Can you point me to the thumb-nail scene selection?

Chapter 8. The next 7 minutes or so after you start it is very nice. You can show off a nice pan scene, the moving stairs, Thandie's beautifully shaped dress, plenty of details in the helmets and structures then some good fleshtones. And not to mention a cool special effect or two! My Wife walked up to the screen last night and said it seems like you could wipe the sweat right off of Vin.

I think people were questioning those who have been saying its slightly sharper and such then the xa2. Placebo affect.

What players did you guys have before?
I have had all of them (and still have most)...

Placebo effect does not apply here.

The A30/A35 are slightly sharper than the XA2, so I wouldn't doubt the 805. Placebo effect? No. I would call it denial for some.

I wouldn't call it denial. I would call it wanting to hear more reports from people who have bought and used the player...other than a custom installer who has special contacts at Onkyo and a person who sells the player .
I dont find the a35 sharper at all when I tested, all I noticed in difference was the reon options to reduce noise, I turn two of them on and leave block noise off. But sharpness I dont know how you see a bit better sharpness, unless you have all the filters on. Im also assuming you guys tried firmware 2.7 where most of us noticed a better picture.

Of course you could just turn edge enhancement on to enhance the sharpness, 1 does a great job without adding any artifical detail. The xa2 also passes all dve tests while the A35 had the odd issue. I dont doubt the onkyo is every bit as good as the xa2, what I do question is how the same hardware and the reon is producing a sharper picture. Especially when someone claimed the onkyo was the same as xa2 on 1080p 60hz but on 24fps somehow the onkyo was sharper. Again im wondering how changing framerate made the picture sharper.
A custom installer? I do have a special contact at Onkyo but that does not in any way shape or form cloud my judgement. Ask the folks in the receiver threads. I get on them as much as any other end user. And if it were another company I would report my same exact findings. I use a crystalio II, VW200 PJ and 5 different players which when comparing I can play the same scene on 2 or 3 of them at the same time. All I have to do is switch the inputs on my PJ or plasma. Here I go again being questioned over here by people who all want to believe whatever their wallet tells them...
