My first post and need help

Heres my sitiuation. I don't know anything about technical aspects of speakers and receivers, etc. and my only two guidelines are what the speakers sound like in person and price. I have two floor standing Boston Acoustic speaker downstairs and are about 5 years old and cost about $1,200 for the pair and I liked the sound better than some more expensive speakers at the time so I bought the lessor expensive speakers. I also generally feel that the more expensive something is the better quality it is. You get what you pay for mentality. I am looking to purchase a xmas present for my 18 year old son for his 10 x 12+- bedroom. My old bookshelves he was using are shot. He wants a 7.1 but to me thats an over kill for the size of room. The problem is price and the other problem is that he already has my old Denon receiver which is working fine (I think) and is a 5.1, he has his own HD DVD player so all I really need is the speaker set up. I don't want to spend the kind of money I would spend on a system for me and my fear is that these htib's are good for what they are but if the sound is bad why waste any money. At first I was going to go with the Onyko HT 800 7.1 for around $450.00+- but he does not need a receiver and I am not sure about the sound. Circuit city had them hooked up to a static FM station and could not tell anything. I have been looking about Fluance and these speakers seem to good to be true like many people say but others disagree. But for $299.000 they look like thousands and I like the price. My budget is $400.00 and perferable less for 5.1 speakers including a sub woofer. The sub could be added later. Anything out there that I haven't come across yet? And lastly, its also for music which is actually more important than watching DVD's. Thanks in advance for any responses if you choose to. Merry Christmas.

You're correct in not getting an HTIB system. Denon makes a quality receiver which you already have and the weakest link in HTIB systems are the speakers and sub which you need.

Definitely go 5.1, in a 10 x 12 room 7.1 would be hard to setup properly plus you're working with a limited budget, it's better to get the best 5 speakers you can rather than trying to stretch the budget for 7.1

Their are several ways you can go as far as quality budget speakers (check the HTIB Alternative Tread) in this forum also for more ideas. But there is really only 2 subwoofers I would recommend and even keep you close within your budget. The Bic H-100 and AV123 X-Sub. Both are right at $200.

Personally I'd go for a 5 speaker setup with 2 pair of Athena B1.2s and the C1.2 center. They are at a closeout price right now from audioadvisor.com and imo are one of the best budget speakers out there. I compared them to the fluence bookshelves in my system when I was setting mine up and found Athena to have a more open and detailed sound.

That would put you over your budget at $500 total, sub included, but an excellent system, you could also hold off on the sub or center speaker for a while if budget is really the issue.

Their are also other speaker choices, check out frys/outpost.com for great deals on the Polk R series. Specifically the R50, or R300 floorstanding, or R150 bookshelf and CSR center. A pair of R50s up front with the R150 surrounds and CSR center should put you just under your budget including one of the subs above. Hope that helps.

Thanks Jakeman02, I just received by Fedex the two Polk R series fronts, 2 rears, center channel, sub and all cost about $500.00 total. When my son opens the speakers I will post on how it sounds.
