Alternate Browser For PS3

Is there any way to use a different browser for the PS3 or do I have to use the one it comes with? Just got my PS3 yesterday by the way, love it so far!!

Unfortunately we're stuck with the crappy browser that's included. Of course you could run Linux, but that's another story...

I'm just curious, why do people care about browsing the internet on their video game consoles? You have a PC with a perfectly functioning browser right? Why do you wanna run a gimped browser on your console? I'm not being condescending I'm generally curious.

I mean I guess I could see if you wanted to browse the internet on your TV but if that's the case then why not just hook your computer up to the TV?

Is Linux possible? I was hoping to run another browser because I tried to watch videos on a site and it said my browser was missing something to run them.

Well for me it was easier to get the PS3 to give me a great pcture on my entire 52" set than my PC.

I love the browser. I like not having a PC attached to the TV. Keeps things clean and simple.

The browser works, but if you're used to a PC based browser its a bit odd and does break on some sites, but is getting better. A Linux browser is better since most work as you expect, but considering you have to reboot and load Linux to get there its not a great option either.

I use it and I'm pretty happy with it all things considered. Plus it a great way to view and download themes to the PS3.

For youtube and such is what I use it for.

I think it because they want an all-in-one solution. I could ask just as easily why someone would want to watch a DVD or BluRay movie on their video game console.

I also am not being condescending, just the way I see it.

Happy Holidays!!!!!

I can tell you I am interested in cancelling cable and watching tv on abc.com. I can do that on my mac or pc but the ps3 won't allow it.

Anybody know of an easy way to do this?

This is a good point considering that the PS3 is marketed as a multimedia device. I wouldn't say there is an "easy" way to do that, no.

What in the world would you want to watch on ABC? Cavemen?

LOST is coming back this season.

And there are a couple reality TV shows I watch on ABC but I will not divulge this information on a public forum. =P

NBC also puts all their shows online too. At least the you have Heroes there.

yeah that browser is crap.

I'll break down the upcoming season of LOST for you:

More ****ed up **** happens, and you will still get no answers about anything because the writers are pulling it all out of their asses and you're wasting your time when you could be watching a show that has a point or is at the very least, going somewhere with it's tomfoolery.

+1. Lost stopped being good a couple seasons ago.

Try hulu.com for watching tv shows through the PS3 web browser.

C'mon guys, I'm sure SOMEONE uses the ps3 browser for porn. That way, there isn't any evidence on your PC!

Hulu works, so you get NBC stuff.

Among others. I use it for House, as well as the Daily Show and Colbert Report every night (a day behind, but it doesn't really matter too much to me). Lately I've been watching the Sarah Connor Chronicles, too.

I wish Sony would put Firefox or Chrome as an option. It's good for us and it would piss off Microsoft at the same time. (good for Sony)

DO IT.

I can't imagine it's that simple. Firefox and Google would have to spend time and money to create a version of their browsers to work on the PS3's operating system and I can't imagine there is too much incentive for them to do that.

At any rate, Hulu doesn't run all that well with the PS3 browser. I've tried it a few times when my computer was down, and it only runs the lo-res files with lots of hick-ups and such. The PS3 should be able to handle them smoothly, and the hi-res streams no problem considering it can do Blu-Ray.

The best thing to watch TV shows on the PS3 with is PlayOn. I use it daily. If anything, there would be a better chance of PlayOn picking up ABC.

I cancelled cable, saving $90 a month. For right now, there isn't anything major I watch on TV, though when Battlestar Galactica starts up again, I'll likely be watching it on hulu. Another solution could be to get an HD antenna and converter box and view your TV shows that way for free - I'll likely be doing this after the digital switch.

I also use PlayOn to access online content from my PS3. It provides a really great interface for navigating the entire Hulu site, plus supports CBS, CNN, ESPN, Netflix Streaming and a couple other stations. There is also a user-run community called www.playonplugins.com that offers a variety of plugins for PlayOn that add support for podcasts, as well as other internet media. Food Network and Red Tube (someone mentioned porn) are both available as plug-ins.

TVersity Pro is also dabbling in online content streaming, but their functionality is neither as polished nor as stable. They do, however, have a few channels that PlayOn doesn't, assuming you can actually get it to work. It's a beta, so I suspect it will get better over time.

FYI: The Opera Web browser is available for the Nintendo Wii gaming console. If we make a petition, we might get Opera to make a PS3 version.

Check the Opera browser for the Wii:

Also, Opera for the Nintendo DSi:

a rumor, but firefox may come to the PS3...

http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/19/f...et-any-better/

The linux option isn't really realistic. It's slow and flash is not supported (there are linux x86 builds, but not PPC)

There are things that cannot wait. I just made a petition to get Opera as an alternate Web browser on PS3. Please sign the petition here:

www dot petition online dot com/PS3Opera

Please spread the news.

Thanks!

N.B. for some reason I cannot include a URL. Please put a dot and paste in your address bar.

I'd like a better browser for the ps3 is because I like to monitor and respond to the PS3 forums. With the current browser you cannot log into the forums you have do it from your pc. It's mostly a plugin issue and how the browser handles them.
