General Question about LPCM and Dolby TrueHD

I'm not 100% up to speed, but my co-worker has a question. The question is general because he doesn't remember his receivers model number.

My co-worker has a 2 year old Yamaha HT Reciever and a brand new Sony Blu-Ray player, will his HT Receiver be able to decode the LPCM or Dolby TrueHD audio on his older receiver?

Thanks in advance

Does it have HDMI input or 6channel analog audio input?

Probably not Dolby TrueHD, but it HDMI 1.2 or 1.1 compatible, it can probably process PCM 5.1 or 7.1.

Ahhhh!

So if he uses coax or fiber optic in then NO LPCM or Dolby TrueHD decoding. Is this what you guys are saying?

Thanks for the responses.

I'm going to find out about 6 channel audio in to the receiver. I do not think the Yamaha Receiver has HDMI in.

Thanks again...

If it doesnt have HDMI in then you cant bitstream the sound to the reciever and get the full sound experience.

Merrick,

Just to be clear, transferring audio via coax or optical, the receiver will not decode LPCM or Dolby TrueHD. Is this what you are saying?

Thanks for your time.

drcruz, optical only supports 640Kbps Dolby Digital 5.1, 1.5Mbps DTS 6.1 & 2 channel (stereo) LPCM @ 24/96. Nothing beyond that. Do note that DD @ 640Kbps and DTS @ 1.5Mbps are significant improvements to what you can hear on DVD.

If you want to feed "advanced audio" to your pre-HDMI receiver, you'll need a BD player with multi-channel outputs and full RCA analog connections (5.1-7.1) to the receiver. (See the specifications of the player to determine what it can decode.)

EXCELLENT!

Thanks Grommet, that's VERY helpful. Now I know what to tell my co-worker. My co-workers BD Player is Sony's BDP S300 and from the manual it has 6 channel audio out. I will find out if his receiver has 6 channel audio in.

Thanks again everyone for responses

The player itself does the decoding so if the player can decode trueHD it has nothing to to with the receiver decoding it. Whether both audio tracks can be passed to the receiver is dependent on whether the receiver can accept HDMI or analog
