Fall 07 dashboard impressions and feedback

Figured I'd start topic since this update has a lot to it.
I spent a total of 5 minutes with teh update this morning. Overall I think it looks better. my launch unit was chugging on the new marketplace layout(no slowdown just long load times getting the content). I had dragged a xvid south park ep into my shared folder on my PC to test the xvid support but then I forgot that I had refreshed my HDD cache a week ago and had to download teh AAC codec again(at that point I had the new Black Sabbath pack for rock band downloading and had to leave for work). So uh yeah won't even get to spend a lot of time on it tonight thanks to a party but please anyone post your impressions.

I spent just a little time with it this morning as well. The look and feel stuff is fine, nothing that makes me say "wow, I'm glad they changed/added that...". I did test the xvid playback and after having to download the AAC codec I was able to play several different episodes of CSI and Burn Notice that I had on one for my PC's so at least on that front so far so good.

Yeah the wow factor isn't there for me. I do like the full screen previews for movies/tv etc.

one thing I did notice that I now have ads on my live and market place blade. I had orginally blocked them when recovering my xbox 1 account but realized the ad sections were just unused space otherwise. Even though I re enabled them they never appeared on my gold account gamertag ever again. It's odd that I'm glad to see them.

I like the XBox RSS feed. I hope it gets updated often.

All of my XBLA Demos are still showing in my played games list, I was under the impression this was going to be fixed. I even deleted a demo off of my HD and it still showed up in my played games with 0 achievements. Any insights?

Where do I download the video codecs? I haven't looked yet, just wondering if it's in the marketplace.

They said in the release notes that this feature is only for trial versions released after this update. So no love for everyone's game list that already has lots of filler in it.

The announcement of the feature stated this was *moving forward*.
To date it is literally impossible to remove existing entries from the servers.

The first time you access media that requires an update, you will be prompted.

Has anyone redownloaded a trial game and deleted it to see if that removed the 0 score?

I like the layout they did to the marketplace.

Does the Divx have to be streamed or can you burn it on to a cdr?
CDR, DVD, USB key, USB hard drive, and streamed should all work.
What are people using to stream divx? I have Tversity and every file I pick says it is not compatible...
any audio delay options? I've had plenty of tempermental divx encodes that needed delay to get in sync. That's one thing that will probably make me keep xbmc in the living room.

There is a DLNA server built into Windows Media Player 11. When WMP11 is installed, it installs a service that runs as soon as you start up your computer. So your entire library of videos, music, photos, and playlists is available to any DLNA client.

But...has anyone actually played a game since the update? I am hoping that this one doesn't cause all my games to freeze. The last big update really did kill my last 360 just as soon as it rebooted. All of my games became unplayable due to them all freezing in the same way 2-5 min after starting a game.

Hopefully they tested this one

Dashboard is a lot faster. Majority of my DIVX files streamed ok over my lan. As a media streamer it's getting there, but nothing close to replacing XBMC yet.
I have had no issues running Divx/Xvid. Streaming thru WMP11.
ALso have noticed that the HD content that I have in WMV format plays much better. It used to stutter every now and then... Has not done that since they Dashboard update!

Does not play x264 content. That sucks but getting Xvid to start is a great start!

The only issue is these formats don't work in MediaCenter. Wonder if they will ever fix that.

Cheers
Whit

Played Mass Effect for a little bit after the update, no issues seen (crosses fingers)

The only divx files I had on my PC didn't work. They are pretty old though, I think the info said Divx 3.1. Maybe I'll download something newer to test.

I tried to watch some xvids that I burned to a dvd and the xbox just says mixed media disk and will not play them..

I thought it would play 264 (w/ 2-channel audio), you just had to rename the file with an .avi extension. Or does that only work for h.264, and not x.264?

it should show up as a mixed media disc. when you go to the video section and choose current disc..they don't work?
can it play movies on my ipod classic
The media player is a lot better, and it seems to me the picture quality of the videos are better. The rss feature is cool since I usually only go to Xbox.com to check my gamercard stats.
Yup it's working now for me...

I definitely noticed the Dash is faster. I kind of like the Marketplace reorg, except for trying to get trailers. Now, unless I am stupid, you have to scroll through everything as ther eis no Featured Trailers selection anymore. It is not clear to me either whether trailers should be classified with "Shorts" or "Movies"

I also like the Xbox News feed. The video with Major Nelson going through the new dahs was nice also. Hopefully they do more stuff like that.

I did play Katamari for 10 minutes after the update this AM and it worked fine.

I installed the upgrade, the xbox rebooted and froze at the welcoming screen. Powered down, restarted and was greeted with the the 3 rings o' death. Used the code check, stayed on 4 rings. Power down, unplugged everything, reconnected everything, No joy.

This is a launch console and I have had no trouble with it. Luckily, I bought the Microsoft extended warranty with a year left on it. Time to give them a call and get my coffin.
