Getting 1080i out of my HTPC

Hello:

I am running VMC with a GeForce 8600 GTS video card through a Maxent 58" plasma (MX-58HPT51). Currently, I run VMC in 1360 x 768 resolution. In doing so, VMC (and Vista for that matter) take up my entire screen.

My Maxent plasma can go up to 1080i, and I want to set VMC to deliver this. However, when I choose 1080i from the VMC settings menu, I end up with black bars on either side of the screen. When I go into Nvidia Control Panel aand tell it to let the video card do the scaling, it always reverts back to allowing my screen to do the scaling.

Don't get me wrong... standard DVDs at 1360 x 768 look sick on this screen (hold the laughter)... I just want the best possible image from my HTPC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried adjusting the H-SIZE in the Picture menu on the plasma?

Even if that works, I would recommend you set the computer back to 1360x768 (or 1366x768 if its available). The native resolution of the plasma is 1366x768, which means thats how many pixels are physically in the display. While it may accept higher resolutions as a matter of convenience, setting the computer to output anything higher would result in the Plasma processing the signal back down to 1366 x 768 pixels. That MAY not degrade the picture, but it won't help it.

Does that mean I will not be able to achieve 1080i on my HTPC through my Maxent plasma? What about upscaling? Is this an option, and if so, how do I enable it within VMC?

Your TV only has 1366x768 pixels. It will always display that many no matter what the input is. It is called scaling.

Yeah. Feed your TV what it wants. No more, otherwise you're just going to make it scale the image, which is never good (unless you are watching stuff with a lot of aliasing, then it can help, but at the expense of sharpness)

What he said. The only true 1080I Plasma's I know of are the Hitachi's. Rest TAKE a 1080I signal but show it at your max resolution which in this case is 1366x768.
