Who has handshake issues with HD DVD player (DVI or HDMI)? - Page 2

Toshiba HD-A1 HDMI->6 foot DVI Cable->DVI Samsung HLN5065W DLP = Black screen during HD-DVD playback. All Firmwares from 2.1 on thru 2.4

I can get to the SETUP menu fine but but I get an NO HDMI Link error as soon as an HD-DVD tries to play. Works fine over component although not as sharp.

I am on Firmware 2.0 for now and HDMI to DVI seems to work fine, but I am unable to use some of the more advanced features of my HD-DVD library of 112 HD's.

I have already brought this to Toshibas attention and I get NO response.

HD-A2 -> Monoprice 5 x 1 HDMI Switch > Panasonic PX4275 Plasma

HDMI Audio fine, but no HDMI Video since upgrading to HD-A2 Firmware V2.7

Had problems with V2.5 as HDMI (Audio and Video) would cut out every couple of minutes. After 2.7 upgrade, audio is on steady, but no video.

HDMI from PS3, Computer, and ExpressVu 9200 HD-PVR work flawlessly through same switch and display. HD-A2 HDMI works fine when connected directly to display.

UPDATE: Problem resolved - one of the fellows on a Canadian forum had a similar problem. It's apparently due to the switching method Monoprice uses on their 501 switch - ports 4 and 5 have a more direct path to the output than ports 1,2 and 3. Moving the HD-A2 to port 5 fixed the issue. That was probably the issue with the dropouts in V2.5 as well - apparently the firmware upgrade just exacerbated the problem.

Toshiba A3 to my Samsung HL-S5687W HDTV via a 3 foot HDMI cable.

When I first hooked it up via the HDMI cable I could see the loading screen but when the HD movie starts picture goes black.

I could get into the setup menu so after reading that a new firmware might fix some HDMI issues I configured my Ethernet port and I upgraded the unit. After the upgrade I can see the load screen as before but when the movie starts the picture still goes away but now I can not even see the setup screen.

Tried everything and can not get a HD movie to show. Emailed Toshiba and no response so far.

A1 >Monster HDMI cable-> Pioneer receiver (can't remember the model) >Monster HDMI-> HP DLP RPTV
Here's my issue:
Occationally I receive HDMI ERROR 1 when loading a standard DVD. My remedy is to switch the receiver's input to something else, then switch back to HDMI. The equipment resynch successfully. The A1 status goes back to normal and is able to play. This problem has been like this since the original firmware. With each firmware upgrade I've performed, I hoped to have fixed....I'm still hoping.

Well after an hour on the phone with several holds I finally got a "its a compatibility issue" and "we will put it on the list to fix in a future firmware which comes ount 3-4 weeks apart but it might not be in the next one"... and "so in the mean time use component cables".

So I am wondering if a HDMI switcher possibly would help and if so which model switcher(s) have been know to work with an A3?

The Help Line was no help at all.

As I had it explained to me, HDMI switches (there may be exceptions) are purely pass-through devices. I was hoping that they would exchange a handshake A3 <-> switch <-> display, which might remedy the problem.

Still waiting for 1.4 ...

Yeah I figured as much myself.. was just wondering if any of them did the handshaking...

Anyone know what the component resolution is playing at from the A3?

I need to test a SD DVD with the HDMI cable. If need be I will program the Harmony 880 to have it use the HDMI input for SD and the component for HD-DVD for now. At least SD will be upscaled properly.

I use a Gefen 2xHDMI in to DVI out to feed a Samsung HLN 467 WX from a Tosh A2 and a Bell 9200 HD PVR. No problems.

I do think the Gefen switch, now discontinued, has a role to play in the handshake. The switch is always on and at:

http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=2208

Gefen claims the switch enables HDCP decoding.

At the time, I didn't know of other switch makers and subsequently wondered why I had to pay such a hell of a price for mine. This may explain it.

A2 -> Monoprice HDMI-DVI cable -> Panny TH-65PF9UK 1080p plasma

The A2 will only do 720p and not 1080i. It worked fine at 1080i back on the 1.3 firmware. Broke with 2.5 and 2.7.

Much of these problems are HDCP issues. Longer cables might prevent the handshaking and when that happens the DVD player shuts off the screen. For me the handshaking just never happens even with two different cables both only 2 foot long.

This whole HDCP is going to only get worse as times goes on. Lets hear it for DRM... NOT

Hd A2-------->Pioneer Elite 94txh 6ft HDMi generic cable-----------> Samsung HLR6178W using same 6ft generic HDMI cable. I get audio, no picture.

I can run the HD A2 directly to the TV and get picture. I think it is a problem with my TV accepting the HDMI signal from an AVR.

HD-A30 -> 3' Monoprice HDMI 24ga. cable -> Monoprice HDX-401 4x1 equalized 2.5 switch -> 25' 22 ga. silver-plated Monoprice HDMI cable -> HC1500 gets absolutely no video, black (blue) screen with either 1.1 or 1.3 firmware.

If I plug the 25' cable directly into the A30 it works flawlessly! I broke the A30 in with 2001 and really was floored. It looked just like I remembered it in 70mm at the Clairidge Theater in Montclair, NJ when I first saw it. Nice reference disc!

I also have a DirecTV H21-200 with the same chain as above into the switch and it works fine, so I guess that the A30 is at fault here. I have a $20 2x1 mechanical Monoprice switch on order, so I'll see how that works until Toshiba gets its act together. I think they will, hopefully with the 1.4 firmware.

Update: The Monoprice HDS-201 mechanical HDMI 2x1 switch works fine with the above setup!

HD-A2 firmware 2.7-> HDMI 6' Cable -> Toshiba 46HM84 audio but no video, picked up an A3 to try and same issue. Looks like I will miss out on upconverted SD DVDs and the best sound quality. Very disappointing. Called Toshiba support and they have noted the issue but it didn't sound like there was much hope of a solution.

Here is an update from my A2. I was running it to my monoprice hdmi switcher then to my Z-2000 projector. It would play the movie for about a minute then drop the video only(I run the optical for audio). I switched the PS3 with my A2 and for some reason the A2 now works. The A2 is going directly into the projector. My Ps3 still works going into the switcher. I guess the A2 just does not like the monoprice switcher.

Have HD-A3 with 1.3 firmware update-direct connect from player to Westinghouse LTV-32w6 (2006 model) via an 8 foot monster HDMI cable.

This configuration produces consistent audio drop-outs 5 to 7 times with a 1-2 second duration over the course of a 2 hour HD-DVD movie.

When I make the same connection with "Component" cables the drop-outs completely go away. I have tried two different brands of HDMI cables with no difference in outcome.

This exact problem duplicates itself also with my new Sony BDP-S300 player I just purchased.

Using the Component hook-up would be fine except that my understanding is that you lose the "Upconvert" (of SD dvd's) feature of these players when you don't use "HDMI" connections. Also my owners manual for the Sony BD player actually states that w/o HDMI, you only get 480i resolution for your BD dvd movies.

maybe try just hdmi to dvi adapter cable, reducing by one, a connection point which may or may not be a place for a problem. they're cheap at monoprice.com.

Yeah, it's the outdated Sanyo Z2. I am not alone on this issue and therefore have little incentive to try roads others have failed. On the brighter side, as days go by the per-day cost of my idling A2 gets smaller and smaller, and at the same time I save a bunch of would-be money on HD-DVDs.

my oct '06 build, fw 1.1 hd-a2 has so far played every sd and hd dvd disc ive thrown at it. so, im not about to update fw.

however, as it runs hdmi to dvi equipped pj i do get some black crush issues on film based dvds and hd dvds; i'll probably try an a3/30/35 as those issues are supposedly fixed in g3s.

A2 HDMI (FW 2.7) --> Yamaha RX-V2600 --> Sony 60XBR1 SXRD

-At times I will not get picture or sound. It seems to work for a few days and then one day it will not and no amount of power downs, changing order of power ups etc seem to resolve.
-It is the latest FW I notice it most but I really didn't use it much before 2.7 anyway.
-At this point, I need to call Toshiba, it's unacceptable. I just bought Bladerunner and can't watch it. I am going to need to take it back and get the BR version. My PS3 has been completely bulletproof through all this.

My A3 went bonkers today! I was playing a SD DVD and it started blacking out, turning green, etc.etc. Initialized the unit...no change.
My setup
Video: A3 to Panasonic PX5075U via HDMI
Audio: A3 to Yamaha YSP-1 via optical SPDIF

I was ready to pack it up and take it back when I decided to try component instead of HDMI and it appears to have solved the problem for now.
Hope that's all it is. I can live with it for now. Although not being able to upscale DVDs over component sucks.

Just got a Monoprice 3x1 HDMI Switcher and it does not work so well with my setup.
Here is the scenario.

Video Connection:
Toshiba HD-A2 --> 3FT Monoprice HDMI Cable --> Monoprice 3x1 HDMI Switcher (port1)
DirecTV H20 Receiver --> 3FT Monoprice HDMI Cable --> Monoprice 3x1 HDMI Switcher (port2)
3x1 Monoprice Switcher --> 10FT Monoprice HDMI/DVI Cable --> DVI port w/HDCP on Toshiba 65HDX82 HDTV

Audio Connection:
DirecTV H20 Receiver --> 6FT Toslink --> Pioneer Receiver
Toshiba HD-A2 Player --> 6FT Toslink --> Pioneer Receiver

Here are the issues I have with this setup:
1. If I turn on the DirecTV receiver it works fine, then turn on HD-DVD player and switch th eport it works fine. If I switch back to the DirecTV receiver I get vertical lines on the screen instead of a picture.
2. After watching an HD-DVD for a couple minutes the screen goes blank. Sound still works though. The screen will remain blank for a bout 10 seconds then the picture comes back. It will continue to do this randomly while watching a movie.

My Toshiba A2 has the latest firmware 2.7.

This same setup works fine with the Monprice 2x1 HDMI Switch.
Though the only annoyance is that I cannot select the port on the HDMI Switch until the A2 fully boots up.
I can readily select any port on the 3x1 switch at any time, but picture does not always cooperate.

My guess is that the 3x1 switch is not so good at the handshaking between all my devices.

Samsung HLN-4065 - HDMI-DVI - 5 Port Monoprice Switch

Port 1 : Bell Expressvu 920 - No Problem
Port 2 : PS3 40GB - No Problem
Port 3 : Toshiba HD-D3 [clone of HD-A3]
Port 4 : Toshiba HD-D3 [clone of A3] NO PROBLEMS !

On my switch port 3 works intermittently. When I went through initial setup, menu did look a little weird. Upgraded firmware and when trying to watch a movie, getting no video. On a whim, inserted into port 4 and all works fine, menu gets centered on the screen as it should be.

I also had someone post on another forum that ports 4 and 5 on HDMI switches are to be used for HD-DVD players [had no idea why they said this]

Tosh A2 -> 6' sony hdmi cable -> Sony XBR 960. Over a month steady use, never an issue;

Same Tosh A2 -> 3' Phillips hdmi cable -> DVDO VP50 -> 3' DVDO hdmi to DVI cable -> Wyman card in Sony 1270 switcher -> 15' RGBHV BNC cable -> Runco 980 Ultra;

tried this configuration for first time today; hdcp issue - see display, then curtains close, blank screen. Switch inputs on VP50 several times, each time pic, then blank. While looking for a set of component cables, I guess it finally negotiated a handshake - after a minute or two, display came back. Worked fine for entire Transformers HD-DVD.

fwiw, the exact same configuration with my Runco has worked flawlessly since I purchased my PS3 a year ago; only change was to put the spdif and hdmi cable in the Tosh instead of the Sony. Newest firmware on both the PS3 and the Tosh; running 1.04 on the VP50.

Bought my nephew an A3 for Christmas. Opened it, upgraded firmware to 1.3 and connected it to my system (Pio 5070, Monoprice 4x1 switch, Denon AVR 4800).
Both HD DVD & Std DVD played flawlessly. He connected it to his system (Pio 5040,
Monoprice 4x1 switch and old Sony receiver). Got no picture but got sound. Connected
to Pio media receiver in an HDMI slot known to be good and still no picture. Brought it back to me and I reconnected to my system and got Pitcure no sound with Shrek 3.
Connected to internet and was able to get both Picture and sound. Reconnected to his
system via component and got picture & sound. Would really like to get the HDMI issue
straightened out as there is no upconvert over component. If anybody has any ideas,
either PM me or reply here. Thanks a bunch.

I bought my brother the HD-A3 for Christmas, I installed it on Boxing Day and couldn't get any picture from the HDMI port. I took the A3 to my place and tested okay with firmware 1.0/1.1. I upgraded the firmware to 1.3/1.1 and still no picture via HDMI on the JVC AV-48P575.

Called JVC Support and said it should work and gave a phone number to call a service company but the JVC AV-48P575 is out of warranty and it's billable.

Toshiba HD-XA2 -- Monster Cable 400 HDMI (40 ft) -- Infocus HDMI to M1 adapter -- Infocus SP7200

HD-XA2 is running version 2.7 and 7200 is version 4.0

I can get the on screen set up to display over HDMI but no picture from a disc. Have tried both SD and HD DVDs, but just get a blank screen. I know the cable and input on the projector are good, because I can plug the HDMI into my TiVo HD and it works great. Called Infocus, they suggested adjut Threshold Synch Level -- with is not on the menu when using M1 input. Called Toshiba, they said it was a compatability issue that may get addressed with the next software in a month or so. The compenent video is working fine and I am using audio over digital coax.

Any other Infocus SP72xx users with the same problems? PM me or post here if you have any suggestions.

thanks

It was working fine with fw 2.0. I upgraded to 2.3 and I started getting "HDMI Error 0" error message. Upgraded to 2.4, the problem is still there.

Now I'm using component cables, not so bad considering the TV converts the DVI to analog internally. The only annoyng thing is no upscaling for DVD disks and the pesky "no hi-res for this content" message.

Edit: I see the menu and the HD-DVD logo, but when the movie starts I get the HDMI Error and it stops.
