Will my receiver take all inputs and output HDMI?

Happy Holidays!

I'm trying to figure out if the receiver I'm going to get will take multiple inputs (s-video, composite) and be able to upconvert and output HDMI to the projector. I'm asking because I still have a chance to run s-video and composite cables to the projector before I put the drywall up. I currently have HDMI, component and Cat 5 wire going to the projector.

I'm getting the Yamaha RX-V3800 and I don't know what to look for in the specs of the receiver to tell me if it will do what I want.

Thanks in advance!

You'll have more luck posting this question in the amps, receivers & processors forum but, I know the answer for the particular Yammi receiver and the answer is yes. The manual is also downloadable off the Yamaha website and shows an illustration of its upcoverting capabilities. It will also upconvert component to hdmi. Just as a suggestion you may want to run pvc pipe (if you can) from your equipment to the projector before drywall. this way you can always run cable if you have to.

The Sony STR-DG910 7.1 Surround Receiver will do what you are asking.
Also... here is a link to the official AVS thread for your receiver.

A chart in the thread says the Yamaha will convert your analog sources to HDMI.

One word...CONDUIT!!!!!!!!

Don't think about it, JUST DO IT!!!

Run conduit prior to putting up the drywall for adding/removing/changing/upgrading cables. Not just video, but the any cable.

And YES, your reciever will do it.

Now STOP showing off that you have a $1600 reciever, while I only have a $250 one.

Look at the Video Conversion section, right there in black and white.

And don't only run HDMI to your projector. Your receiver will do the transcoding to HDMI output but it is highly likely that it won't work on some sources, particularly cable STBs. It may work sometimes, it may work all the time, but it is VERY common for it to work sporadically or not at all. HDMI is still flaky. Run component video in addition to HDMI and you will be happy always.

very good advice....

Thanks for the input. I was 99% sure the Yamaha would do what I needed.

I currently have HDMI, component and Cat 5 wire going to the projector as well as a 3" PVC conduit.

Again thanks for the input and advice.

Dave

What was to point of this question, if you already ran a conduit? Seal up the drywall and get to viewing LARGE content.

Very confusing...

killerdoberman,

I originally was going to run HDMI, component, composite and s-video cables to the projector. I had no idea that the receiver could take composite or s-video inputs and output the signal to the projector using an HDMI output. I am going to have HDMI, component, composite and s-video inputs mounted in the riser to accommodate many different devices (cam corder, PS2, etc.). So, I thought since I had all of these inputs I needed to have the same outputs to the projector.

To make a long story longer, I just wanted to confirm that the receiver could take multiple inputs and send them to the projector via HDMI or component. I just wanted to cover my butt before I put the drywall up and not run s-video and composite cables to the projector.

Sorry about the confusion.

Happy Holidays!

Dave
