360 No Sound - DVD/Video Download

I have a new 360 Elite with the following setup:

Overhead Panasonic PT-AE900U
Yamaha HTR-5990
XBox 360 Elite
All connected via HDMI pass thru via the receiver.

I have the 360 set to Dolby Digital 5.1, and have sound when navigating through the menus or on games, but if I insert a DVD into the player or download video content from Live Marketplace - I get the video, but no sound. I haven't gone through trying the component, because I wanted to use HDMI for cleaner setup. Just curious if anyone has had this type of problem and might be able to shed some light in my direction.

Well for a first post, I was expecting a little more input - but here is what I found out.

Anything in 2 channel sound was find when connected to my HTR-5990 using HDMI. Anything in DD 5.1 would produce a loud high pitched sound for whatever reason. As much as I didn't want to go to component, I did and used the optical connector for sound. Since then I have not had any problems. I will probably test the VGA connection since the Panny AE900U supposedly renders great images that way and will use the optical.

I'm kind of confused. But you do know that the 360 DOES NOT output sound via HDMI, correct?

It's very misleading from MS, but you have to have a separate audio connection if you are using HMDI. Yes, it pretty much defeats the purpose, as really the only pro's to using HDMI on the xbox is very minimal PQ improvement, 1080p where available, and for bragging.

You need to use optical+HDMI... you can't just do HDMI. Personally, since I have a 720p television, component+optical does great for me.

I'm having a whole new issue...I just tried watching some dvds and trailers that I had saved on my system, but I don't hear any voices come through. All I can hear now is the background music. I'm using an optical cable and never had this problem before. I just got this Elite system 2 and a half months ago, and used the same setup for my launch box. I really hope they don't tell me that I have to send it in since this system's so new. (no way I'll settle for a refurb at this point, especially since I just bought a bunch of Arcade stuff)

Anyone have this issue?

"But you do know that the 360 DOES NOT output sound via HDMI, correct?"

Umm, yes it does. I would recommend not being so definitive about things you are wrong about.

It apparently will do stereo sound, but not 5.1 sound from what I am gathering. I was under the impression that the HDMI cable would provide digital picture and sound (DD) - but would not, unless I used the sound adapter with my HDMI cable.

Are you using a receiver or just output from the television itself?

You need to use the optical out for 5.1
I have my Elite going straight to my Tv with HDMI, bypassing my VP50 pro.
Then I have the optical out from the Elite going to my receiver. the Elite comes with the dongle necessary to get 5.1 over optical when using HDMI. the dongle has an optical output and two stereo rca outputs jacks(if i remember correctly)

Yeah, what Aaron said. Have you tried by passing the whole thing? Maybe it needs to be reformatted.

I don't currently have a surround sound setup but I do have my 360 hooked to my TV via HDMI and my TV has both coaxial and optical outputs. Couldn't I just run a cable from my TV to a reciever and get 5.1?
