I own a 360 and am using it as both my DVD and HD-DVD source for a projection home theater that I just built. My 360 is connected through VGA to an Epson HC1080 projector, projecting on a 106" Da-Lite Screen. I've seen no end of reports that the 360 is a horrible DVD player, and some that say the same about its HD-DVD capabilities, in comparison to stand alone players and/or the PS3.
I do not have the stand alone equipment at home to make this comparison with. I'm hoping someone does. The comparisons I've seen online appear skewed, as they either do the testing over component (which is known to be a bit fuzzy on the 360) or they test using a calibration disk that does not have certain flags properly set, which the 360 deinterlacer has trouble interpreting.
I don't really care so much about those kinds of tests. I just want to know how the 360 does in the real world.
My own eye tells me that HD-DVD's look terrific on my setup. DVD's are a mixed bag. I've seen some that look great and others so-so. Probably has to do with format flags and the 360 is not as adept at dealing with bad ones. Eventually I'll get a stand alone.
But is there anyone out there who has done a real world comparison in a somewhat scientific way? How about after this Fall update that just came out? Any difference?
