I know you can get a speaker in the wall and apply a thin coat of plaster over it to conceal it. Do I need a specific speaker to do this or a shield of some sort so the plaster doesn't damage the speaker?
I've heard of this before. But I have to wonder, if an object is made to move air and you cover it so it can't, doesn't that defeat the function of that object? I personally wouldn't do it.

Thanks.
There's already an audio product called the "Ventriloquist."
At CEDIA last year, I got to hear the product you're describing, from a very good custom speaker company, and it didn't sound horrible, but it sounded bad. In choosing a speaker, the application is very important. These are speakers you wind up with when the wife and the designer insist that nothing be seen.
I think I'd rather just listen to the TV's built in speakers....
I take that back. I'd go with the literally in-wall speakers, turn off the TV and let house guests wonder exactly how many people I have boarded up in the walls. You know...just as a conversation piece.
So your telling me this isn't an ideal spot to put my speakers? Just kidding....I am putting together a whole house audio system for my parents and my mother doesn't want to see the speaker son the wall. We would do ceiling speakers but we can't get to the ceiling space. Thanks for the help and jokes.

All right...since I was enough of a wise guy to make a joke...

There are quality in-wall speakers and most of them can be installed with paintable grilles. The only thing one (mother) would see is that a portion of the wall surface is perforated.

These are exactly what you are describing. I just started working for a dealer and I have spent the past week roughing in several pairs of FX8s and B1630 subs into a large home. Unfortunately, I have not yet gotten the opportunity to listen to them in a finished installation so I cannot comment on their sound.

Oh I hope you get to listen to them and report back here when you do.
