Movies Rock on CBS in HD

According to CBS.com, the "Movies Rock!" special tonight will be in HD though Zap2It doesn't say it will be. Anyways, don't have high expectations for the show nor do I see its purpose but if it's in HD, I'll watch to see what it's about. And you can't go wrong watching Carrie Underwood in HD...

It most definitely is in HD.

Yes it is. And it's actually quite good; it's keeping my attention.

They are paying homage to all the older movies and the music that went with them with live performances. So far, all of them have been very good. Really liked the Usher/Singing in the Rain. Very well done.

yes it is. decent PQ. watched OTA with one sub. some macroblocking at the intro with the flash bulbs.

lost interest after one or two songs. CBS must be desperate for programming. wonder how it will do in the ratings

It always suck when they do either a show like this or an awards show, the movie footage is never in HD. Is there a reason why? It would be great to see at least some HD footage of movies that have never been shown in HD before.

Because dealing with the multitude of different film aspect ratios is a pain in the ass. The only show that addresses this is the Academy Awards, but they have to cut all the film sequences and nomination packages twice and then simul-roll them from two different Profiles so that the OAR clips look correct for both the 4:3 and 16:9 audiences. This extra post-production cost is generally too much for smaller lower budget productions to absorb.

In general I thought this was a pretty good show. Excellent PQ and outstanding 5.1. Excellent performances by Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, Usher and Carrie Underwood.

I can't think of a single time that any of those performers has "rock"ed, ever. Maybe the name of the special should have been "Movies Pop!"

I wonder what will happen after the cutoff and the networks drop their SD feed. Letterbox would postage stamp the 4:3 material and center cut would loose the sides which is more important on features as they are framed for a wider aspect ratio. Letterbox is the lesser evil to me, but aside from NBC I don't see much.

I liked this show as it demonstrated that some current artists can master the classics. Usher's Singing in the Rain was quite impressive (albeit 4:3). The title of the show was completely misleading and the promotion was abysmal. Ratings were not good at all, but Friday is a bad night for TV especially during the holidays. PQ and AQ were quite good, but that was to be expected coming from a NEP Denali truck with Sony cameras.

They had to do 4X3. The framing mimicked the nostalgic look of the original. The lighting for that segment was fantastic along with the set.

I didn't know it was on. I only found the show after tuning away from another abysmal Knicks game.

Quite correct. The performance was great too. It's a shame that such an effort was seen by a small audience.

It's almost like CBS was trying to burn it off. At least it beat Smackdown.
