Im looking to pick up the HD-A30. Does anyone know if it will play the stack of DVD+R movie copies that I have?

Are they authored as HD DVDs? If so, I can confirm that yes they do work.

I'm not sure why standard definition would be any different if that's what you meant.

As long as they are authored as dvds or hd dvds, they should work.

They are copies of standard definition movies. The specs on the player says it supports DVD-R, but I'm not sure if that includes DVD+R discs. Besides playing HDDVD's, we also plan to use it as an upconverting DVD player for our std def movies, which were burnt onto DVD+R discs.

Even though +R disks are not spec'd for these players, people who tried have reported success. I tried a couple on my A3, and they all worked without any problem. I believe that the HD-DVD drives in all 3rd gen players are the same.

I can confirm that DVD+Rs play flawlessly on the A2, A3, and A35. I'll assume that the drive in the A30 is the same.

DVD+Rs were in fact invented by toshiba , Just like the optical connection that was also Invented by them which is "Toslink".
In fact more info can be found about dvd players, burning dvds and free apps at. :

Thanks for all the responses!

Someone said that the reason DVD+R is not listed in the manual is because it is not a DVD forum approved format but DVD-R is (sort of like blu-Ray lol).

It depends how they were authored. Legal copies of non-copy protected things that I own play fine. However, DVD+R's recorded with my Magnanox MRV700 set-top DVD recorder won't play in my Toshiba A2 or A20. DVD+R DL's are an entirely different ball of wax.

Set top dvd recorders record in a different format than dvd roms.

please help i have a question, why A30 powers up and read the disc extrememely slow, is this normal? will a firmware update help with this problem or it is just how HD DVD works? how can a brand new out of the box unit need an update?

You should update the firmware. There have been slight upgrades to the boot times. It's still a little slow though.
