DESPERATE need help! Xbox 360, HD-DVD and 1080i!

Hey you guys, I have a mitsubishi HD1000U (720p/1080i) projector, an xbox 360 with HD-DVD drive connected via VGA port on my projector.

I can only get it to output 720p and 1080p (which my projector will not support) and SXGA in between. My xbox is up to date... I want to watch movies in 1080i and I cannot find the proper resolution to do so.

Can anyone help PLEASE my girlfriend is coming over to watch a movie tonight! Haha

VGA will only do 1080p. Why don't you just run it at 720p?

i would assume running it at 720p instead of 1080i would degrade visual quality, especially on a 106 inch projection?

My friends Mits looks pretty damn good at 720p. I doubt your girlfriend is going to notice.

You've got a 720p projector. Forcing it to 1080i or 1080p just degrades your picture.

You have a 720p projector that will also accept 1080i. That does not make it a 720p/1080i projector. It is native 720p, so that is the best format to feed it.

as stated a few times your projector is native 720p so forcing it to 1080i is actually worse....

VGA will not do ANY interlaced resolutions. All PC resolutions are progressive, unless you go back many year. This is why you will never see 1080i listed as one of the supported resolutions.

Modren PCs support 1080i over VGA, and if the projector does better scaling than the 360 then 1080p content output as 1080i will provide a better picture than using the same output at 720p. However, the 360 doesn't support 1080i though VGA, only HDMI and component.

I have an IN76 wich is a native 720p projector and I watch HD DVD's in 1080i and play games at 720p. I have went back and forth between 720p and 1080i on HD DVD's and I think 1080i looks a little better, wich means I think my projector has a better scaler. I wanted to try 1080p for movies over vga but for some reason i get some overscan issues went set to 720p over vga, and i didn't want to switch back and forth from component and VGA all the time so I just stuck with component for now. Maybe someday I will get an HDMI xbox and try that out.

So do you have to manually switch from 720p (games) to 1080i (hd-dvd movies) each time?

Or have you found a way to specify 720p for games and 1080i for movies.

thanks,

jeff

You would need to change it manually in the system blade each time.

Lame. Oh well its worth it for me to switch it each time

Maybe I will write an email to Microsoft for a feature request.

Your projector has a native resolution of 720p (1280x720). Set your xbox 360 at this resolution and forget about it. There is no benefit in using 1080i output to a 720p monitor anyway. The projector (like a digital TV) can only display its native resolution... everything that does not match this resolution will be scaled to fit... so your content is going to be scaled to 720p anyway. You probably should make the smart decision and have it only scaled once.

Note: to watch a signal with 1080 lines of resolution, you need a display device capable of displaying 1080 lines of resolution. That would be limited to 1080p LCDs/Plasmas/Projectors/etc... or 1080i HD CRT monitors. Being able to accept a 1080 line signal and being able to display this signal without scaling is not the same thing.

Acutally, when it comes to HD DVD playback, 1080i would be the way to ensure it is only getting scaled once, as then the 1080 line image is only interlaced before it is sent out the 360 and only scaled at the display. With 720p the 360 is downscaling the video and then the TV will likely overscan that a bit, scaling it a second time. It likely won't make much difference for HD DVD playback either way though.

IF you are actually going to WATCH a movie with your girlfriend, then something is wrong.

I've "watched" many movies in my time, and I still have no idea what happened in most of them.
