Harvest Ridge Theater (A CJ Project) - Page 44

That's a great question. I don't know! I looked at the specs and selected the center channel. I'd like to hear some feedback on the pros/cons in dumping the center and using a third main in place of the usual center channel, particularly in an AT screen configuration.

I received the Oppo BDP-83 BluRay player today. It was well packed and contained some interesting additions...

Oppo box removed from packing box

Opening the box reveals two calibration / sample disks. I almost purchased the Spears DVD with the unit!

The DVD unit comes shipped in a reusable cloth pouch (though it seems too thin for holding much).

It also comes with a remote and an HDMI cable

Oppo goodness!

I can't wait to get it hooked up this evening!

Is that a good or bad thing?

I was wondering the same thing, Jeff.

I called Axiom and had the center speaker deleted from order and replaced with a third M60!

Thank you Michael. I didn't realize that it was better to have three identical mains, but I'm on board now!

That OPPO looks very, very nice. Enjoy your new toy.

Sounds like a great choice! The Oppo looks like fun too, I need to spend some more money...

Pro's for keeping the center
  • you have a speaker should you ever get rid of your theater, you can place under or over a TV.
  • or basically, none.

Con's for keeping the center
  • Non matching speaker in your most critical speaker configuration (LCR)
  • more expensive

Good. Of course I responded to your question before seeing that you already resolved the issue.

No problem. Thank you for the help!

hmmmm, so now do I need rethink my Axion center? Was out to dinner last night with some friends and one of them had that ringtone that only teens can hear...a couple of my friends heard it, but not me. Is it likely to make any difference? Right now, it's in my living room temporary setup and I like it.

CJ,

I think Michael steered you in the right direction, especially with an AT screen. I have three identical Triad speakers in my theater and I'm always amazed at the sound stage they produce when sounds are traveling across the screen. Very immerse. I'm sure you'll be happy.

Bill...I'm sure he did! I trust Michael. He felt rather strongly about it , and he's the audio expert, so I deferred. I was able to change the order from the big honkin V180 to another M60 without an issue. If you have it, maybe you should keep it? I'm not sure. Did I mention that Michael felt strongly about having a uniform sound stage?

Oh, I grabbed the iphone/ipad app that generates tones at different frequencies. At a scout meeting we did a blind test where we generated tones of different frequencies and asked scouts and adults to signal when they heard the sounds. It was amazing how few adults could hear the higher tones...

Maybe high frequencies do not matter as much as the heart thumping low bass. Heck, maybe Michael and his HUGE A$$ IB chamber has the right approach.

It's a bit different for you. You have the bookcase Axioms. CJ has the big floor standing units with the additional midbass drives. The center and the bookcases are practically identical. I don't think you will hear the difference. My original set up was just like how you are currently using them and I was crazy happy.

Hey. I resent that remark! My IB chamber only cost me around $1500 all in. That includes the materials, drivers and amp. But I do grant you the "huge" part.

DUDE! I got your back on this one!

Heck, after hearing the bass coming out of your IB chamber, I was ready to start tearing down stuff and rearranging my layout so I could get one too! If we hadn't just finished drywall (and if it wasn't so painful), I would have been able to make the change...

I didn't put enough smilies in my post. Was being playfully sarcastic.

Good to know.

Even though I don't actually HAVE them yet, it IS what the Axiom guys recomended for my size room. So kudos again to a company willing to sell you the RIGHT thing, not the most profitable thing.

What did you get, Tom? What models?
I haven't yet. I have the center (VP 150) and two QS8s. And that big-a$$ SVS Cylinder sub. They recomended M22s for the fronts. And I'm thinking one more QS8 for a rear. Or maybe start with a QS4 and see if I like it or not.
Sorry I didn't see this sooner, but if it's any help in giving you peace of mind, I've had both. I had the Axiom VP 150 with my two M80's in my old theater, but in the new one with my A/T screen, I replaced my VP 150 with another M80 for the center channel. I'm very pleased with the result. The VP 150 was no slouch, and I'm sure the new 180 is great, but I think there's something to be said for having the identical configuration (vertical) all the way across the front. It really is "seemless." I think you'll be very happy with your decision.

Unless I missed it....how did you attach the GOM to the edges or tops...basically how did you get a clean look with staples on the ends that were are not being covered by the chair rail.

The million dollar question! I saw how he was doing it. I'm sure he's got some pictures to share!

AHA. Good question. I used Biggy's secret hidden nail trick!

I'll try to post something intelligable about how to do this in the next day or so. I just spent the last 20 minutes trying to type out something and I think it's more confusing than helpful. I didn't take photos as I went along, but I think I can mock up something.

Have you fired up that AIX demo yet? I've been reading some good things about it in another thread.
