I have not yet. I haven't even taken the time to get the projector dialed in yet. I'm trying to stay away from it so that I can get the room finished. I'm really close and hope to finish up this weekend.

I've been looking to get my projector calibrated as well, but they want at least 70 hours on the bulb before you have it calibrated. I've found a claibrator that is making a trip through the area in mid October. I'm thinking hard about getting it done then.

That said, I'll open the AIX this weekend and see how it goes.

I ordered two buttkicker amps to power the seven minis that I have install in my chairs. Short story...backordered indefinately (since July). I've given up on the BK amps. I'm looking for alternatives.

I posted a new thread in the appropriate forum to hold these responses, so please chime in so I can get my butt shaking!

If we could get HeyNow to kick in his mammoth shed we could open a factory. But I'm only going out there if he installs AC.

Also, I just placed an order for a dozen clamps, a man can never own enough clamps, Every project is an excuse to buy more.

$6.99

I clicked on that link and it says they are $11.99. Did they go up, or was that a mis-print?
Snooze you lose. They were on sale, this week I grabbed eight 24 inch pistol grip clamps as they were on sale. If you wait long enough the sale price will probably cycle back to the bar clamps.

http://www.harborfreight.com/24-inch...der-46809.html

$4.99 Keep in mind that like most Harbor Freight tools these are Chinese knock-offs. Same design as other vendors maybe a little cheaper materials, not intended for heavy duty use.

A man can never own too many clamps.
which of these 2 clamps are better?
For what? there are size limits of what you can do with a 24 versus a 36. Pistol grips go on a lot faster, Bar clamps with the screw mechanism IMHO can apply more force.

Haa. Ok, thanks. I don't even need these, but you built me up with all of your clamp hype. I figure I'm going to need them down the road. Sorry for the hi-jack

For working solo and trying to wrestle a piece I need clapped up so to hold it in place, the pistol grip units work great. I have a few name brand ones from HD. For more precision table top work the bar clamps are better.
The 12 inch Pistol Grips are $1.99 today. Time to stock up.

Great for framing.
Every one of those plastic pistol grip Harbor Freight clamps that I have bought broke...and I bought about 8 of them. I didn't use much force on them either. I do not recommend them! Go with either the metal ones or a better brand like Irwin if you need to clamp and reclamp quickly.
Agreed, my harbor freight pistol grips stripped after a few uses, my Irwins from HD have lasted 15 years. 1 just broke.

For real length, I inherited my grandfather's pipe clamps and they are still going strong.
Put me down for another who had problems with Harbor Freight on the grips... I love HF and cant seem to get my self out of their store in Tampa but they are very hit and miss for me on anything I buy there.

FINISHED! DONE! COMPLETE! AMEN!

After three and a half years of work, I declare that the Harvest Ridge Theater is COMPLETE!

I started my dream in 2001. Back then, it was a 51” rear projection TV in the basement and seating was on old couch. When we built our new home in Winchester, we had bigger plans in mind. Even before the slab was in, I was measuring and dreaming. We started finishing the entire basement on Memorial Day of 2007. Drywall was hung by Memorial Day of 2008. Yesterday, we finished the theater! It has been a long road…despondency during the drywall sanding stage, many design changes (added a new exterior door and a window), unemployment, and even far too many hours noodling things through that should have been easy!

There are still a few minor items to complete in the rest of the basement, but the theater is complete! I learned many lessons during this build, but I’d do it again in a heartbeat! I had a lot of fun and acquired some great skills along the way. The meet has been scheduled and I’m going to enjoy the space for a while. Here are some photos:

THEATER:

Screen wall:

Biggy’ step (thanks for the design advice)

Smoke detector:

Rack in the equipment room:

The theater contains the following equipment:
130" 2.25:1 SMX Screen (AT)
Axiom M60 L/C/R
Axiom QS8 (side and rear surrounds)
Polk 12" Sub
Panasonis AE-4000U projector
Denon 3311-CI Amp (7.1 configuration)
Oppo BRP-83
Toshiba HD-DVD Player
Popcorn Hour C200 NMT (currently working to get it configured)
XBox 360
MiddleAtlantic 42u rack
Home built file server (with 12TB in a RAID 5 array)
Berkline 12006 HT chairs, power recline and mini-buttkickers installed.

I am indebted to the folks who contribute to this forum. The ideas, answers to my questions, YOUR questions, and your encouragement were very helpful along the way. I only hope that my meager build can inspire others in some small way!

Here are some photos of selected areas in the rest of the basement.

Track lighting installed in the stairway:

The blue tape on the wall is marking studs. I am going to install a lighted poster frame on this wall. The side walls will have poster frames as well (they will not be back lit).

Cherry trim for the bar has been finished and is awaiting a coat of poly:

The entrance to the theater is flanked with a ticket booth on the left and a decorative niche on the right. I had glass cut for the ticket booth last week. We installed it on Sunday:

I obtained quotes from local glass fabricators. The cheapest one I got in Winchester and the surrounding area was $363. I had it done at Dulles Glass in Manassas for less than $100. They did a fine job at a great price.

The punch list for the rest of the basement is as follows:
  • Install cherry trim to bar front
  • Install threshold in doorway to storage room
  • Cut down doors in storage room
  • Install cherry pole cover in main basement
  • Touch up paint on stairs
  • Install glass shelves in niche
  • Install glass shelving unit behind bar (candy counter)
  • Install shelving in sump pump area
  • Insulate rim joist area in sump closet
  • Insulate rim joist and ceiling (between joists) in equipment room
  • Install drop ceiling in equipment room
  • Install can lights in drop ceiling (eq. room)
  • Install poster frames and lighted poster box in stairway

That should keep me busy for a little while!

Congrats on finishing! Wonderful job

It's not too early to start planning for "life after theater", so here's a link to help with that:

LOL. thanks guys. I've really dumped money into this project and it will take some time for the budget to build back up (that or the wife will need to get a job) . I do know that my next project will be...get this...a deck and an addition under the deck for a workshop/screened in porch with a built in shed.
You may want to check your local codes regarding a shed under the deck adjacent to the house. I suspect that you will have to build it to "Home Addition" standards.
AWESOME!

You better have that bar finished by the meet.

Not that I'd, you know, rain on anyone's parade or anything, but your screen looks a little crooked. I'd hate to make you go back start over. No sir, I REALLY wouldn't like that. In fact your whole STAGE looks a little crooked. Maybe you need to go back and start all over again. That, or take a picture with the camera level. You DO have level, don't you?

Thanks! I did have a level, but she got laid off when the work dried up.

I haven't started my research yet, but it's on my list of things to do. Thanks for the pointer!

Congrats CJ! It's been an enjoyable journey following your progress.

Congrats CJ - can't wait to see it.

Awesome CJ

My next big purchase I think is going to be a Anamorphic lens, I really hate Zooming but it will have to do for now.
