Recommendation needed

I want to get a new surround receiver that has HDMI w/audio capabilities. I've been a lurker here for a while - I've read a lot on the subject - but I'm still at a loss on what I should be looking for. Basically, I watch a lot of movies and I like them to sound good. I'm not looking for 'best of breed', nor am I looking to break the bank. My price range is between $500 - $900. I've been looking at Onkyo (605, 705 and 805), Yamaha (RX-v661 and RX-v861) and Denon (AVR 1908 and AVR 2308CI).

That being said, I don't know enough about this stuff to make a decision. I've read quite a few posts basically saying that the sound quality varies from listener to listener. I currently have a Sony (can't remember the model) 5.1 Surround Receiver with 5 speakers and a sub. I paid about $250 for the receiver and 3 (centers and 2 surrounds) speakers at CC about 6 years ago, plus an additional $80 for the pair of front speakers. To me, it sounds great. I've decided on the Onkyo SKS-HT540(b) 7.1 Speaker Kit as far as replacing my speakers.

Also, since I just bought a HD-A30 and I will be getting HD DirecTV soon, I assume that upconversion capabilities on the AVR would not be necessary. Please correct me in that thought if I am wrong.

Any thoughts or insight on what may give me the most bang for the buck AV receiver?

Thanks.

Patience... I Love Denon and I beleive the 2808CI (not the 2308) is the first receiver that has all the HD Audio formats via HDMI.
