Hello Ron,

Once I get the room all repositioned I will post pictures. Not a lot of basements in Texas. The room is dedicated and on the first floor concrete.

How do you think dual A7S-450's with the 1300 watt amps would compare to a single A7-900?
I would imagine the duals to have a couple of db greater output above about 30hz, but the A7-900 should strongly dominate below that.

In a moderate-sized sealed room, the dual A7S's might sound better than the A7-900 when room gain comes into play.

Has anyone had any experience with the eD A3-300 with the upgraded driver? I'm assuming it would perform similar to the eD A2-300 but with a bit more power? At $480 it doesn't seem a particularly good value as for $120 more you could get the eD A5-350, but unfortunately some of us live in normal size houses where the HT has to share space with the rest of the stuff in the family room and the eD A5-350 is just too physically large.

I would recommend placing some of that "stuff" in the family room on the sidewalk and ordering the A5-350.

i was thinking the same thing, but really, it is only a couple of inches here and there. i fought with the decision of 'overkill', but ended up going with the a5-350 anyways (this past sunday!).

i hope my decision is worthwhile!

If you can fit the A2-300 then I would think that the few extra inches of the A5-350 would not be a problem. I think the A5-350 is a killer value at the current price.

I have been purchasing eD products for 2.5 yrs (a bunch of car stuff for my 2005 GTO and 1966 Mustang 'vert). Excellent value...and they were periodically doing special prices on their forum. Needless to say, I have a lot of gear sitting around looking for more use (lets see...4 x 16Ov.2 drivers; 9.1 amp; 9.2x amp...can't think of anything else for the moment).

Last week I took the plunge and ordered a bunch of HT stuff. I ordered a pair of their towers for our family room. Plan is for 2 channel w/o a sub (no room). Ordered smaller HT full range speakers for friend's new basement HT (house due for completion this spring)...oh, yeah. I almost forgot...

...the A7-900 for MY home theater! Yeah...and my wife is fine with the idea. Then again, this is the wife that enjoys a blast in a turbocharged V8 automobile...mountain biking in the middle of nowhere (WV, for example)...and even HELPED ME paint the ceiling and front wall black in our theater room this weekend (note: this room is directly off the front foyer, and opens into the kitchen/family room area as well.

I feel sorry for you guys whose wives don't get it...

BTW: not only is the price increase coming...but it is a GRAND opportunity to combine other speakers as well to enjoy the package discount!

Hello all, long time lurker here

OMG, you guys are killing me I ordered an A3-300 with the upgraded driver and it should be delivered soon. Now I have a problem, I think I want an A5-350 I don't have a dedicated ht *live in a 2 family house* and the measurements of the room is 16x12x8.

My question is, would it be worth it to me to upgrade?
I'm trying to decide between the A7s-450 and the Epik Valor. The hard part is there isn't a lot of user experience out there for either sub at this point. The A7s seems like an incredible value, but it is $200 more than the Valor, and I'm not sure if it would be overkill for my room. My room is ~ 19 x 25 x 7.5. However, my theater is all in the front portion of the room (~19x13x7.5). The room in its entirety is sealed, with a stairwell going upstairs. What does everyone think? I know this is the eD thread, so I expect to see a lot of people saying to just buy it, but I would appreciate some honest opinions. Thanks.

Hey, you don't know SWMBO! I was lucky to even get the size plasma I wanted for the family room. And believe me I measured every which way but the A5-350 is just too large to fit in the only spot a SW could go; it's going to be a tight fit as it is with the A3-300.

Hi all,

some questions about the A7-450 and A7s-450

-if it comes up to performance in a smaller room which one to go for ?
-why is the A7-450 more expensive than the A7S ?
-A7s450 with 550 watt amp or the 1300 Watt amp ?
-Will the 1300 Watt amp kill the single 18" driver cause the same amp is normally used to power dual 15 or 18" drivers ?
-shipping costs international is that including taxes, vat and import duties ?
-spikes I do understand but what does "hourglass" mean ?
-what are the exact dimensions ?

regards,

I have not heard the Valor, but I have an A7S-450 and it is a very good sub. I have mine at the front of the room 10-11 feet from my seated position. My room is sealed, but it is a little over 11,000 CF and I am very happy with the output of this sub. I also like the clean response (not muddy). I considered the Valor when I was picking my sub, but I wanted a lot more power than the 350 watts that is offered with the Valor. I use my sub 80 to 90% for HT.
Thanks for the response. I guess part of my concern is if the A7s will overwhelm my 3,500cu.ft room. I'll probably have the sub about 10 feet from my seated position, but in the corner of the room.
It would only overwhelm you room if you have it calibrated too high. If you calibrate it to match the other speakers or even perhaps a little higher, you'll be fine.
my HT area is about 1700 ft^3 and i bought a7s
so if it overwhelms yours it should rape mine
post #48 of 15422
it fills 11000 cubic feet? wow

anyone know the shipping price on such a unit to toronto and which service they use? UPS kills Canadians with brokerage fees

also, can anyone explain why so many of their models are so exceptionally good? Is there one aspect of their design that is just head shoulders above the competition? Drivers maybe?
One factor that makes these good is their main considering when dealing with the size of something is how will they ship it (shipping companys limitations of weight and size). If your not limited by size, then you have give the sub exactly what it wants. Getting performance in the size of something your willing to deal (meaning, performance in a tiny foot print) with is always difficult and in a lot of cases will cost ya.

Until recently, you didnt see a lot of subs of this size. I think this says it all, haha.

Seeing the size of some of these beasts and that some folks have multiples of them, size is obviously not a big consideration for some. The WAF has been mentioned and size obviously plays a large part in that. As such, I took the list and looked up dimensions specs and calculated displacement. Note these volumes are not the internal enclosure volumes but the external volumes, most including feet and grills, for comparing the sub sizes...

Elemental Designs A7-900: 19.54ft^3
Epik Conquest: 13.75ft^3
SVS PB13-Ultra: 7.05ft^3
Creative Sounds Dual SDX-15 driver + Behringer EP-2500 Amp + Behringer DEQ2496 ($1630 ID): unknown
JL Audio Fathom 113: 3.63ft^3
Velodyne DD-18: 5.44ft^3
Def Tech Trinity: 5.95ft^3
ACI Maestro: 5.81ft^3 (amp not included)
eD A5-350: 6.83ft^3
JL Audio Fathom 112: 2.86ft^3

It's obvious that the $ for some of the JL products buys you this caliber performance in 1/2 - 1/4 the volume of the other subs listed. Almost shocking how small the F113 is compared to the top 3 subs. I thought the SVS PB-13 Ultra was a bit smaller than the eD A5-350 but the opposite is true... tossup for the most part. There's been some PB13-Ultra vs Conquest discussion and it's amazing that for the $ and size that this is even a comparison.

Just thought this might give some insight into sizes for those of us that size plays a major factor in a sub purchase. It's looking like for a combination of performance, size, price, and aesthetics, I'm leaning towards the SVS PB13-Ultra.

The A7 cost more than the A7s because the A7 is larger (costs more to ship, more wood, and more assembly labor due to internal bracing differences)

When I called elemental Design they told me they recommend the 1300 watt amp over the 550watt one for the A7s. (did not discuss the A7)

hourglass means that the foot is shapped like an hour glass instead of a cone such that the foot is flat instead of a point on the floor. perhaps better for deep carpet and wood floors IMO.

The guys at eD can answer your questions the best, especially since no one here has actually received an A7-450 to compare it with an A7s-450. Just head over to their website and talk to them online.

Does anyone know if eD charges your credit card when the order is placed or when it's shipped? I am thinking of ordering A5-350.

Thanks,
For the rest of the questions:

Contact us directly for Intl. Shipping. We do it via FedEx Intl. Economy which includes brokerage and duties but not taxes.

Dimensions should be online, 22.25" cube for the A7S 25"x25"x37" for the A7.

@Chris,

Thx for the reply
In general if it comes up to performance and spl / freq what are the key differences between the A7S and the A7 ?

Is the 1300 Watt amp not too much for that single driver ?? cause normally you use that amp to power dual drivers !

I am very much interested in the A7S cause it is sealed so no cat can crawl into it so hope you are once more willing to answer...
the A7 has a grill, so the cat will have to tear the grill to crawl in.

A7 will go lower, go louder than the A7S, but of course it's much much bigger

Like that

And no, it's definitely not too much.
I have got to mention this, in various dealings I have talked to Chris and Ben on the phone at eD. I have also dealt with Alex via email. Each time they have provided kickass customer service and taken the time to answer questions that may have been a little outside the scope of what they do. I think ed on customer service alone, in my personal dealings with them, is just tops. Plus my A5-350 is in final assembly!!!!!!

Hi, anyone know the +/-3dB response of the A7 - 450? Thanks.
