Shipping a plasma across country?

I need to ship a plasma (60") from Michigan to Texas. Does anyone know any good, reputable companies, or somewhere there would be a list? Most places I've been looking only ship up to 50". The other problem is that I'm going to be receiving the plasma in Michigan because I was in Michigan when purchased, but just found out I need to go to Texas. They won't let me change the shipping address. So basically I'm getting it from the manufacturer, and have to turn around and have it shipped to TX. Also, what are some things I should look out for? How much is insurance usually? Thank you.

Find out what company is delivering the plasma to you in Michigan and give them a call.

edit- I just recieved a 42" from New York to Texas a few weeks ago, and Land-Air Express was the company that showed up to my house.

Thanks joemama. I'll definitely be giving the company that's brining the plasma to Michigan, was just wondering of others in case.

you might try AIT, i was told they are a preferred carrier for Pioneer. and i know a couple of forum sponsors have had plasmas delivered through them. don't be too shocked on the prices though as an individual they will probably all hit you up pretty good for such a large and heavy box with high dollar breakage potential.

Be carfeful about "consealed" damage issues and make sure the freight company fully insures your unit.

^^ Good idea, but my understanding is that few to no common carriers offer "Concealed damage insurance" coverage. It’s a good idea to request actual ” Concealed damage insurance” and if not available the best you could likely do is add a temporary rider to your homeowners policy.

Businesses have options to add coverage for unexpected damages.

Of course, no matter how you slice it it's going to cost you.

Chris and Robert, thank you. Whichever carrier I use, I'm definitely making sure they offer insurance.

Robert, the home insurance rider that you are talking about, is it called something specifically, or just the regular theft and damage insurance that I have?

I'll second AIT. I know that Newegg.com uses them for larger TV's & Newegg is a class-act company!

If packaged right the breakage rate is very low (somewhere under 3%). I would ensure that you have all of the boxing, packaging, and materials are present before shipping. Packaging with LCD, DLP, and plasmas are much better than years past. If you don't feel comfortable packaging the display yourself, ask to see if AIT can provide this service for you. It will be an additional cost.

Unfortunately AIT does not do home-to-home. I just called and they said they only do commercial delivery.

My experience with AIT was less than desirable. It took them a week and a half to ship it from Las Vegas to Kansas. The scheduled delivery was two days late, which caused me to cancel a Thanksgiving flight to family. The TV sat in Vegas for 3 days before it even moved. The local rep was rude and threatened me about the delay saying it was most likely damaged. The delivery guy was by himself and if I wasn't able to help him up the stairs to my front porch, it would have sat in the driveway (raining at the time).

AIT is on my "avoid at all costs" list.

Could you cancel the order and then reorder with new address?

+1 that could be a good choice in this instance even if you had to pay for the return shipping (but not restocking fee?). it maybe cheaper to pay that then turn around and ship it to your self from mich to texas.

also if you do ship it you will need to open it and check it out when you receive it and make sure to document/photo log that it is in good working order in case of damage after you ship it.

I would see about cancelling the order, if possible. I for one would not want to buy from a vendor who would not be willing to help you in this matter.

couple of things to note:

if you are reshipping a plasma, the rules change: carriers that do it for OEM's and vendors do not have the same rules for a reshipment

Be aware of insurance limits: plasma TV's are specifically excluded from coverage in the fine print of many carriers tariffs

a couple of years ago, a member shipped a $5k plasma by Fedex : he bought extra insurance from them for the full value: the plasma arrived damaged and Fedex refused to pay...showing him the exclusion in the terms & conditions

All in all, bad idea to ship a plasma

Pretty much no freight carrier wants to do insurance on a used Plasma. Allot of them got burned so I would suggest UPS as they are probably the best at claims but again the risk is still out there and the cost is very high. That is why most companies have their insurance cover the concealed damage. Like Pioneer for example.

I would try ABF freight systems. I shipped a 65 inch Panny plasma from my house to a buyer and it arrived in perfect condition.

Thank you all for your advice. We're looking into seeing if the order can be cancelled and re-ordered. I want to avoid shipping the plasma at all costs (besides from the vendor ofcourse). I may actually just rent a van or suv and take it down. It may be the safest bet. I had to transfer a plasma once from Detroit to Montreal via minivan and it went fine. Texas is a bit further though.
