What kind of speaker system is this and how do I set it up properly?

I have an incredibly old (10 or 11 years old) speaker system made by a company called "Definitive", of whom I have never heard before. Up until recently, I thought this was a system lacking a subwoofer. Not so, since there were two subwoofers on what appears to be the bottom of the two main tower speakers. Whether this is a 5.0 or a 5.2 system, it's strange. The "subwoofers" just take the same connection as the speaker usually takes, so it's just one speaker cable running to it. This means that it's not dedicated, and just seems to handle the low frequency tones while it hands off the higher frequency to the tower speakers. I thought an A/V reciever did this and the speakers just outputted the sound. Anyway, how would I go about solving this and properly setting it up?

10 or 11 years old isn't exactly incredibly old, but, anyway...

Maybe you should take a look at the Definitive Technology website and also the Definitive Tech Owner's thread in the speaker forum.

Most of the questions you have are probably already answered in one place or the other.

Oh, I wasn't aware that the company still existed. I'll check there, then.

Is there a power cord for each speaker?

I don't know how old you are but, as pointed out, 10 years is not "incredibly old".

It sounds like your speakers are 'powered towers'. They must be plugged in for their subwoofers to work. If you were to use these speakers without a dedicated subwoofer, you would just connect them normally and set your receiver up as having NO SUB. The receiver will reroute the LFE channel appropriately to the speakers.

There should be model numbers someplace on the speakers - probably by the speaker terminals. That info would be helpful for any further questions you may pose here or elsewhere.

They both have inputs on the back for plugging in a subwoofer, on second glance. I don't really know this type of connection, but it is very similar to a single component/composite wire.

Also, mildly off-topic, but is there a glossary of terms and acronyms such as HT, HDM, PCM, LFE, etc.? After seeing their context, I can hypothesize what they mean, but it's still annoying to see ones that I don't know.

It's a Definitive BP 2000.

Those are nice speakers.

You really should see if you can get/download a manual from Definitive Tech's website. There are a multitude of connection possibilites with those speakers depending on what other gear (mainly other speakers, sub, receiver/processor) you have and how you want to go about it.

The Definitive Owner's thread in the speaker forum should be pretty helpful with these.
