Maybe I can comment in a month or two :-) I don't have DirectTV now but I'm toying with the idea.

I have D*TV HR20 & I'll be receiving my Sammy 5084 tomorrow. I'll chime back & let you know once it's in house.

What's your native res on your current TV? As I recall I check off 480P/720P & 1080i as my resolutions on my current Hitachi 1080i set that's being returned.

If you drill into the actual setup pages and select HDTV from the left menu and then TV Resolutions on the Right Tab I have all boxes checked (480-1080

It seems that everyone is selecting tv res from 480-1080 on the direct tv box. can someone explain why?

Just spoke to direct tv rep. the settings posted above should be the setting used for the best preformance

Sure. The reason we select all resolutions is because we want the TV box to pass through the signal and not perform any scaling. The scaler in your TV is more than likely much nicer than the one in the TV box. If you turn Native "off" and force "1080i" then the TV box is performing some scaling and probably degrading the picture quality. Letting the TV box "pass through" and turning Native "on" ensures that the TV performs all the scaling, thus giving you the best picture quality you can get from D*.

Oh, and if you chose "stretch" instead of "pillar box," the box is again scaling the picture. Though, I'll admit, I don't like watching in a pillar box format, but I use the TV's stretch feature instead of the box's.

Hope that makes sense.

it does the tech support at dish said I should turn native off and that it should only be on if i did not have an hd box. so that part makes me a bit confused.

If you want to listen to "tech support," go for it.

I've got native on and it sets the TV to the resolution of the broadcast (though you'd think it would set it to your TV's native resolution every time). For me it works the same as running "pass through" so the TV will perform all of the processing. Try turning it off and see if your TV still determines the proper HD broadcast resolution. If it does, you can leave it off if it makes you feel better.

I experimented with turning "native" off, and it sets my HD channels to 480 instead of 720p or 1080i like it should. If you set the box to accept all resolutions, leave "native" set to on.
