Question: Video Scaler-will it help?

I currently use the Oppo DV971 upconverting DVD player connected directly to a Samsung HLN617W 720p DLP 61" TV. The connection is through DVI. The picture quality is quite good.

I also receive high definition TV from my cable provider. The picture from the high def source is much better!

I have just read about the new Geffen video scaler. It sounds very interesting. Do any of you experts think that this unit will be able to improve the image quality of standard DVD's into a 720p DLP?

I have not yet invested in any of the High Def DVD formats as I am waiting on the format war to end...if it ever does. So any help in this area is truly appreciated!

Thanks!

There are always benefits to a video processor, I would say scaling is potentially helpful but probably not very helpful. Your Oppo should do a fairly decent job already. You might want to look to clean up signal with an Algolith Flea, but otherwise I would say that a VP won't make your experience night and day since your utilizing a upconverting DVD player already. The noise reduction in the flea would probably have the greatest effect, but it is about noise reduction, not about scaling.

hope that helps.

A Lumagen HDP or HDQ would give you excellent scaling, spatial noise reduction, mosquito noise reduction and per-pixel SD/HD video deinterlacing. Output 480i from the Oppo to the Lumagen. Then set the output of the Lumagen to 720p to drive your display at it's native rate. This should give you the best possible picture.

Thank you both for your replies! This at least gives me something to consider!

Alright, I'll crash this thread, what's the difference between the HDP and HDQ? Is it just inputs and form factor?

The HDQ has more inputs for sure and is in a slender box form as oppose to a big box look of HDP and also the HDQ has SDI, the HDP has it as an option only..But both should render you the same picture...
