Harry Potter: Goblet of Fire won't read in PS3!?

I just bought Harry Potter 4 and 5(not the set), Order of the Pheonix plays fine, but Goblet of Fire won't play. The PS3 doesn't show signgs of acknowledging it as a disc. I have the latest firmware. Bad disc, or is anyone else having this problem?

Does the disc say Blu-ray or HD DVD?

I watched this one earlier today in my ps3 running 2.01, and when I first put it in I could hear kind of a funny noise that must somehow be related to the disc loading, kind of sounded like the reader would start revving up, spinning the disc, and then stop immediately and then try again a few seconds later. It did this about 10 times maybe before the disc eventually showed up in the xmb. The movie played fine after that, until it got to the Yule Ball scene where it the movie would freeze for a few seconds, then come back on and the video would go into fast forward to catch up with the audio. It did this a couple times and then was fine for the rest of the movie. I know it's probably not related, but I remember the sd version would always have a noticeable pause for a layer change (I'm guessing) during the yule ball scene right before they start dancing...

Hehe, no it's an actual Blu Ray disc. Yeah it does as you described:

"kind of sounded like the reader would start revving up, spinning the disc, and then stop immediately and then try again a few seconds later"

Maybe I'm not being persistent enough, I'll try again later.

Although I ordered the Blu-Ray 5-disc set of Harry Potter, the "Goblet of Fire" disc is the HD-DVD version!!!!!

I purchased mine from the Warner Home Video store so it might be forever before this mixup is corrected. I email then and asked if they could just ship a replacement Blu-Ray disc for "Goblet of Fire" but so far no response.

My Goblet of Fire reads and plays fine in my 60GB PS3 FW-2.01. Individual disc not boxed set.

plissken99, does your copy of HP:GoF have beige disc art or a photo for the disc art?

I am going to test all the individual HP discs I received yesterday to make sure they work.

Edited to add:

The first four HP individual BDs play fine in my PS3; although I am almost certain the disc I received for HP:GoF was meant for the BB boxset due to the beige disc art whereas the first three all had photo art.

watching right now

My BD giftset has an HD-DVD GOF too......
So now there's a chance that even if I get the replacement BD GOF (who knows when) it might not play????
Is there even a QC dept in Warner? They must all be on christmas break or something.....

I think this should be in the news or something, maybe then they'll get their act together.
I have all five individual BD's. Only GOF has the beige disc art and the other four photo art (good catch Paul).

GOF, however, plays just fine on my 80gb PS3 fw 1.93 as well as the other four from beginning to end. Discs loaded right up w/ no delays.

Hope you guys get it figured out or get replacements.

Thanks. My "incredible" eye for detail has been known to be both a blessing and a curse.

Greetings,

I had the same experience. I put the disc in my 40 gig PS3 and it spun the disc and then started making some strange noises. I tried it three times and figured that I had a bad disc. I took the disc back to Wal-Mart and exchanged it on my way to work. I have not tried the replacement yet.

It's always something.....

Actually, Warners QC is probably the best of all the Studio's.

If you want to complain about QC, pick up the Battlestar Galactica season 1 boxset on on HD DVD.

I keep hearing about Battlestar Galactica, what actually happened?
I think putting the wrong product in a boxset is pretty bad, anyone with the simple knowledge that Bluray and HD-DVD exist should be able to catch that mistake.

Its funny, I had problems with my Goblet of Fire disc, too. I took it back and the new one I have works.

Let me tell you the story of the run of Ricky Martin CDs that had Judas Priest's record on them...

Greetings,

Well the second GOF disc won't play either. I will return it to Wal-mart today and go to Best Buy.

I might just pick up the HD DVD version instead. This will be my third trip to the store to try and get a working disc.

This is really annoying....

I usually attribute such disc behaviour to DRM, usually Sony discs.

Now you guys have got me worried, that perhaps I'd better watch my films when I buy them, instead of waiting.

No problems with GoF (bought individually) here, on my 20gb PS3 with fw 2.01.

Seems several discs while going through production and packaging got scratched. Disc 5 of the set is the one that is being widely reported but others have reported more being scratched.
I've got a replacement set coming from amazon as Disc 5 was scratched. When I played it the image would pixelate and the audio would go out of sync. It was quite obvious the laser was having difficulty reading the disc because of it.
I'm hoping that I'll be able to make a complete working set from the two.
The QC on this boxset, to put it mildly, is subpar.

The reports start coming in at post #148 of this thread.

I definitely think this is worse than Warner putting the wrong disc in the pack. At least you know you'll get a good disc in the end.

degas, did your individual GoF BD come with beige or photo artwork on the disc itself?

I'm pretty sure I know where all the correct GoF BD went that aren't in the BD HP set. They're in the individual BD GoFs.

Greetings,

Well, The second GOF disc wouldn't play so I went back to Wal-mart this morning to return it. The manager told me that they couldn't accept a return on an open movie.

He then offered me a third copy for exchange advising that he had no way to test them. I got him to agree that if this third copy did not work that he would accept the return.

He agreed.

Well needless to say I got my money back as this one would not play either.

3 Discs !

BTW - all three had the beige artwork not the photo artwork.

I have no idea what the problem is. My PS3 has the latest FW etc.

I went to my local BB and the one I got there works just fine. The only difference is the color of the case, which is red.

I was not willing to take another chance. I have OOTP and SS which both play flawlessly in the PS3....

It's not only the disc. It's the Year 4 book too. It has an HD DVD label and all the HD DVD extras listed on the back. This took some effort to screw up.

Plays fine in my PS3.

I just cannot get the extra's to play. In fact none of the 5 disks show extra's. Maybe somebody can help me out here?

For those who got the HD-DVD version in their set, I want to trade you for my Blu Ray version. Since I support both formats either is fine with me.

I set up an ad in the classifieds for anyone interested. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/vbcla...p?do=ad&id=901

Regards,

Did you happen to disable Force 24Hz playback on your PS3? Change it from Yes or Automatic to No? For some reason when setting Force 24Hz to Yes and Auto, I got a purple tint on my front projection setup, but setting it to No fixed the problem. It still played, it just had a purple tint. Others have reported that setting this to No also fixes playback issues of other titles, and it appears to be the broken feature across releases (haven't verified with 2.10, but it appears to be a problem from 1.91 until the version before 2.10). It played on my 42" Panny Plasma without problems with Force 24Hz on.

I get them after the movie has played, but I have not tried to access them from the menu while the movie plays, as Warner titles automatically start the feature.
The Special features menu can accessed at time during playback by selecting it from the pop up menu (press pop up menu button), or by pressing the disc menu button to access the satnd alone Special Features menu. Keep in mind that if you view a special feature from the stand alone EC menu, the player cannot return to the feature without restarting the feature.
