I know this is hashed to death everyday, but I've been out of the AV loop for a few years and I'm trying to get caught up again. I've seen a lot of threads for $1000 and $200 budgets, but not in between. I'm looking for a 5.1 HTIB or receiver and speakers for $500-700 shipped not including cable. I just ordered a Samsung 4665 and have no real audio equipment to start with. It will probably be a while before I add blu ray or HDDVD to our setup, but it will happen eventually. I have a Sony progressive scan DVD player, but I'm not opposed to adding an upconverting player if it's necessary. The room is small, 17x18.
I lost a good bit of my hearing in Iraq so at some point I plan on adding an EQ to try to compensate for some of the frequency loss. It also seems to me at this point I should be more worried about getting a receiver that gives me a bit of growth. It seems like everyone ends up replacing the speakers at some point. I'd really rather have some nice bookshelf speakers but the wife doesn't understand there is a big difference and probably never will.
I've been looking at the Onkyo HTIBs and the AVR 247 and 347, but I have no idea what to look for as far as speakers go.
