I'm feeling the same way, I've got a Samsung tv and my lovely samsung combo player, and have been happy with both products (minus the DTS-MA over analoges) but I will absolutely not buy their products if this is how they treat customers.

Samsung is big enough to not to worry about customer royalty issues. Fact is you can't avoid Samsung products in your life. Who don't have couple Samsung cell phones

Their way of treat customers is hardly new. As far as I can tell, that's the same way 5 or 10 years ago. As a corporate culture, Samsung is more interested in pumping out new products with rich feature set, cheap price and at a record pace than making existing customers happy.

Yeah it's just lousy business to lead customers on, have the ability to fix HD-Master on the 7.1 outputs and just get plain lazy and not give the order their tech department.

I could have bought another Samsung this was my first dealing with Samsung. But when I went shopping I turned to Panasonic.

Samsung will get my Raspberries vote. I wouldn't buy one of their flat panels now, nothing from them really. Don't beleive it, bad bussiness pratice hurts the bottom line. What kind of marketing guys did this outfit hire?

Yea...with Pioneer out of the biz, my next TV in the distant future (assuming there is one) will be a Panasonic.

That sounds a bit pessimistic...

(Now why would that be?)

I agree, though, Panasonic is a great brand. Have a projector and a big screen from them. In general, they exceed by expectations.

(don't want to say for fear of an infraction. )

RCA video and digital audio use the same 75ohm coax wire. However, RCA analog audio tends to use a pair of wires instead of a coaxial one, so you should avoid using audio-grade wire for video or digital audio.

so are you're saying the higher end wires that are molded together ,either 3 or 5. have different grade wires for the audio and video??

Yes. You will almost always find that the video wires are coaxial, while the analog audio wires are not.
Since the 7.1 outputs on this player are sending high quality audio maybe the coaxial type is a better way to go. Cheap enough to find out I plan on buying 12 hi grade 3ft coaxials from mono price, they do state for audio or video. It's like .65 cents a cable. They also have a switch box for $35 with six inputs (5.1) times 3 or 4 with a remote.

Here's were I'll test my 5.1 switching and see how it goes. If it sounds good HD-Master problem is solved and very cheap.
What, no firmware yet? I believe the next firmware will open HD-Master on the analog outputs. Think positive.

Hi. For those interested, Battlestar Galactica season 4.5, Doctor Who Planet of the Dead, Green Lantern First Flight (all on BD of course) all play perfecto !
Also the BBC Blu-ray of Doctor Who quoted above has a feature we do not see often: a 2 Entertain High Definition set up guide in it, a bit like THX video/audio setup guide. Nice feature and it is useful on my tv as I noticed my brightness and contrast were incorrect.
So it appears all BD s coming these days play fine on the 5k. Good for us but this will not bring a new firmware for our player faster though (if we ever see one).....
Take care all
J-Y.

I'd prefer they take a long time on a solid firmware release (like 1.3) rather than rush out a quick fix for broken movies (like 1.4). While I doubt we'll be getting any new firmware unless we start getting vocal again, I'm pretty happy just sticking with 1.3 as long as all the movies keep playing.
I run 1.3 also and have been very lucky. It's only once in a while that I find a BR that won't work. The Soloist is one of those movies I couldn't get to play. Kept freezing on the menu after I selected anything.
I don't get why people would suffer through movies not working when 1.4 plays everything.
From what I've read it depends on the individual BD-UP5000 and whichever update you are using. Some BRs will not play with the latest firmware but will play on earlier versions. Some BRs will not play on earlier versions but will play on the latest version. It just seems to be the nature of this player. I went through about five different BD-UP5000s before finding one that currently plays everything I throw at it.

If and when I start having problems I'll switch to the latest version firmware. Why screw up a good thing. On the other hand there are BD-UP5000s using the latest firmware who have either DVDs, HD DVDs, or DVDs that won't play properly. I guess you could switch back and forth between firmware versions but what a pain. If I had copy of 1.3, as a backup I might try 1.4, but I don't. I'm glad you are happy that you have a player that is compatible with all the DVDs, HD DVDs, and BR discs you have! Good Luck! There is a thread here somewhere that list the unresolved disk issues for 1.3 and 1.4.

I run 1.3 because when I update to 1.4 every movie I play starts freezing, even those movies that I own and played fine with 1.3. From what I have read here, I am not the only one that this happens too.

I have tried to update to 1.4 on at least 5 occasions, even getting a copy from customer service, with no luck. I am not going to pay big bucks to send this unit in to have it fixed since it is out of warranty. I have since purchased the Oppo BDP-83 which I like very much, especially the technical support that is provided. Also, I have replaced most of my HD movies (only have 5 left) with Blu-ray versions. Whenever I want to watch one of those 5, I then use the 5000 with its 1.3 version firmware.

Does Oppo charge a fee for support AFTER both the warranty and the extended warranty has expired? If they offer an extended warranty how long is it and what does it cost? How long is the original warranty?
Thanks-

Oppo I find it hard to believe the oppo puts out a better picture than the Pany BD80 I bought for $220. The Pany looks better than the Samsung, In Sharpness of image, deinterlacing is top notch also. Get the oppo if you play DVD audio and SACD that's it.

Were's the firmware for HD-Master analog for the BD5000? Come on buddies kick it out already. You got tons of customers here checking in to see if it happened yet. Give us a break from a time spending process, please.

Are any of you guys interested, or know anyone interested in an AS IS sammy 5k? It cosmetically looks great, the whole thing is still nice and glossy black. It plays dvd's, and HD DVD's no problem, but has trouble reading blu rays.

Obviously out of warranty. Is it something worth throwing on ebay?
What kind of $'s do you think? A spare back up may make sense pm me?
Any chance of that firmware update coming yet that allows dts hd ma playback over analogs? I left the 5k for the Panny bd-80. I can honestly say the picture is better on the Panny and lord is dts hd ma AMAZING! I can't believe what I was missing. I popped in the golden compass once it was set up and I was blown away in hi res 7.1 bliss. WOW Needless to say I still use the Sammy for the occasion hddvd and for regular dvd's since it's connected via digi coax while the Panny is full analog connection only. Both still have use but the 5k is collecting more and more dust. I wish Sammy would have followed through on all the initial claims. I wont by Sammy again. Good luck all.

There seems to be a comprehension gap here. By any chance can you perceive that with the dissolution of HD DVD, there is no further point in adding new features to the 5000? If not, please accept the premise that given there is absolutely no further need for dual format players (unless you happen to own some HD DVD discs), Samsung will see no further need to extend the capability of its dual format product. For whatever degree it provides support for new BD releases, be thankful (and hopefully that will continue), but quite simply, forget about any new functionality -- it simply isn't going to happen!

Oh I accepted that, hence the Panny purchase. I just maintain hope lol

Companies do have to watch themselves, though, especially in down economic times...

If they leave current customers hanging too often, then when the tide turns customers will not be so quick to buy their next new product and believe the "coming soon" features then.

I don't have any high hopes for DTS-HD via analog... but I think it would be a good idea for them to pursue it still with this player.

Now that the "war" is over... the last thing companies need is another reason for customers to wait on the fence... that being waiting for all new features to be implemented before buying a Blu ray player because in the past promised capabilities never materialized.
