I am one of those that cannot use firmware version 1.4. As soon as I load that firmware, my player starts freezing, even with movies that play fine under 1.3.

Just for info, my software is listed as:

080629.03_8124_0914.11_XAA

Thanks much,

Steve

Eject the tray and then press and hold the info button on the remote until the f/w status screen shows up. I'm not sure if this works in the "no disk" mode with the tray closed, I just did it with the tray open. I gained this insight reading the article posted yesterday on the secret Sammy internal documentation site. Vinnie posted a direct link. If you read closely you will see the instructions. I initially skipped over it since I thought I already knew how to get this info from the menus in the unit, however some of this info in new and I have not seen it documented before in either the user or service manual (course I have not had time to read the entire service manual, YET)

Thank you. Will give this a try.

I tried it with and without a disc, but not in the tray open condition. I did finally get the info button to work with a movie playing, but only got the normal info screen.

Will advise if it works for me with the tray open.

Ok, went down and tried it and got it to work in the tray open position. Info on my screen as follows:

LDR: 8124 / Front: 011

Software: 080529.03_8124_0924.11_XAA

Region: A/1 (BD/DVD)

Macrovision: UBS01

Please note that there is a correction in the Software version. I had originally wrote it as 0806...; it should be as above, 0805...

That is it from one who cannot apparently load firmware version 1.4 without problems arising.

Best regards to all.

Interesting. That theory is shot since it i the same as mine, except you are running the May 1.3 instead of November 08 1.4. Let's hope and cross our fingers for you guys that 1.5 or whatever it will be called will take on your units. If not you probably have hardware service issues with your players.

Have you tried to take it all the way back to 1.0 and then patch forward? I don't know of a way to go back to pre 1.0 also I'm pretty sure I only have 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4 images due to when I got involved in these puppies. What does Sammy support have to say when you tell them 1.4 won't take on your unit?

BTW - I neglected to report my region and macrovision info, but they are the same as yours. I was expecting some folks loaders to report different numbers, but it is probably the firmware version and not the hardware version of the loader.

Another idea is to speak to Sammy and get the loader and front board firmware updates and reapply them. I know they exist since the service manual details how to run the updates. It may be that that firmware is whacked out and needs a refresh. I see not other reason why 1.4 would not take on all players except for some bizarre hardware problem. I will hunt around in the service manual when I have a chance and look for any internal resets that can be performed.

Ok, so what is "end of the day" 5p ET? closing time in Korea? Midnight in some US time zone or just the heck what?

I thought that the Sammy guy in the CNET forum said that it is actually Friday and that the document is in error, or at least eluded to that.

The CSR was probably just reading the FAQ and assumed that it was releasing today. Sounded yesterday that they still had some things to work out and test before they could release and were HOPING for a Friday release.

BTW - This player is not "green" we should push Sammy to do an OTA for this so we all don't have to waste a CD-R blank that will just end up in a landfill anyway. Would only make sense for a movie released on Earth Day even if it was unplayable on release. Course HD and DVD players are not "green" anyhow due to the physical media. I have enjoyed the limited watching of MKVs and streaming of movies and TV shows that I have done. Thinking of making an older mac laptop my permanent solution so I don't have to give up my laptop when watching.

Serra J: Hello, I am a Samsung Technical Support representative. How may I assist you today?

mike: Hi. I have a bdup5000. I understand from a prior chat session that a new firmware update is required to play the bluray disc of the film Avatar. The support page relating to this issue (see here: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa/...9&AT_ID=237883 ) indicates that the firmware is available by "CD" as of today. How can I get a copy of this CD?

Serra J: Please allow me to go through the inquiry.

Serra J: We are having playback compatibility issues with Avatar blu ray disc playing with Samsung blu ray players. Our engineers are working on it to release a firmware to fix this issue. Until the firmware is released specifically to fix this issue. There is nothing that can be done.

Serra J: As of now, we do not have any fixed time frame for the release of the firmware. But, I am sure, it should be released pretty soon in the future.

Serra J: We apologize for the inconvenience. We need your co-operation and patience with this.

mike: If you look at the link that I provided from Samsung's own website, it indicates that the firmware will be available today.

Serra J: I double checked and see that the firmware will be release today at end of the day to fix this issue.

Serra J: Yes, you are correct.

Serra J: As its not available at this moment, you cannot get it.

Serra J: It should be available at the end of the day.

mike: So will it be available only via CD and, if so, how can I get a copy?>

Serra J: You need to contact us to get the firmware CD.

Serra J: You can even download it from the web site.

Serra J: And then burn to a CD.

Serra J: We will provide the link and the instructions.

mike: Well, can I order the CD now?

Serra J: I mean link to download the firmware and instructions to burn it on the CD.

Serra J: No, you cannot order it now as its not available yet.

Serra J: It will be available at the end of the day.

mike: OK. I will check back. Thanks.

Serra J: You're welcome. Is there anything else I can assist you with?

mike: nope

I am able to go back as far as 1.2. I flipped back and forth between 1.3 and 1.4 so many times that I lost count. I used my copy of 1.4, another poster here that was kind enough to send me a copy, as well as a copy from Samsung. It was always the same result with each one.

To be fair to Samsung, the only time I mentioned this problem was when I asked them to send me a copy of 1.4. The rep said nothing more than sorry about that. No suggestions or advice. I think I may go ahead and try a live chat just to see what they will tell me.

Would be worth a try. Is it still under any kind of warranty? They might be nice to you and check it out for a small fee and might be decent to you. I have always gotten great service from them.

Also, another thing to try, if you have not already done, it is clear all of your persistent memory on both sides of the house. Do the reset procedure a couple of times and maybe leave it unplugged for a couple days and try 1.4 from the fresh disc from Sammy. I have taken mine back and fourth a couple times and many more times on my spare unit trying to get UFO Showtime to play and have had no ill effects that I can detect due to it. We will see with the new release. I'm tempted to try it out on my spare that is still under full warranty 1st just in case or a FUBAR. If that was to happen on my main player it would not be a good thing. Fortunately I just got a longer HDMI cable in from Monprice last week so I can easily unbox the spare and hook it up. If all goes well with the spare and a quick test of past trouble discs, then I will take the main player forward. This is IF and WHEN we see this stinking patch. If it does release today or Friday it will be a world record for firmware releases for this player 'cept for maybe 1.1. to 1.2 which was a simple fix.

H/W Chat I just completed.

Chat InformationPlease wait for a Samsung Agent to respond.

Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Nick N'

Nick N: Hello, I am a Samsung Technical Support representative. How may I assist you today?

Steve: Good evening. My question is in regards to the BD-UP5000 and its firmware.

Nick N: Please go ahead with the Firmware question.

Steve: I understand a new version will be coming out soon. Version 1.5 I believe.

Nick N: Samsung is releasing new Firmware update the Blu-ray player. It will be available by the weekend. You can download and update the Firmware in the player.

Steve: My problem is that when 1.4 came out, I was unable to use it. When I load it in my unit, the player will then start to freeze when I play a movie, even one that I was able to play before when using 1.3. Will I still have this problem with 1.5?

Nick N: You will not face same issue with the new Firmware update.

Steve: I sure hope that is true. I really like this unit and would sure hate to think I would not be able to play new movies like Avatar.

Nick N: You can download and update the Firmware in the player to watch Avatar Blu-ray disc.

Steve: Thank you very much for your help. I have asked that the new firmware be sent to me on CD. Do you know how long that will take to get to me? I do not have a CD burner.

Nick N: It will take 5 to 7 business working days to receive the Firmware CD.

Steve: I believe that answers my questions. Thank you very much for your help. Have a good evening.

Nick N: You're welcome. Is there anything else I can assist you with?

Steve: No, I believe that is all I have. Thank you again.

Nick N: Tired of tech TV shows that only review your product? Check out Samsung SPSTV "Keep It Simple" every Thursday and Friday where we show you live on the web how to get the most out of your Samsung product. Just click here to check us out online.

Nick N: Thank you for chatting with us. If you have a minute, please press the "close" button and fill out a brief survey to help us serve you better. Have a wonderful day!

I did not press hard on the 1.4 issue as you can see. Since I was told that there should be no problem with 1.5, I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt.

I have downloaded 1.5 and will try that as well as the disc from Samsung that I asked for.

I am hopeful, but must admit I have my doubts.

Purchased my unit 12/2007 so out of luck as far as warranty I believe.
well i burnt the thing but has anyone actually tried flashing it? making sure its not a kill switch sent by samsung to get us all to buy new players
post #11082 of 13238
^haha, who's the bravest? I haven't reported about any deaths of the BD-P1000 so we might be okay.

Kludge, simple solution for your "green" complaints, use a CD-RW. Verbatim make/made some excellent discs.
I have downloaded the update but am unable to open it to burn it to a cd. All the progams I attempt to open the file with say it is not a supported file type or is damaged...
Help please!!!
Try redownloading it. www.imgburn.com is always a trusty solution for me.

Hmm, just got an error upon burning and verifying it with said program:

E 18:00:05 Verify Failed! - Reason: Layouts do not match.

It could be the drive or the disc, though (haven't used them in a while).
imgburn. It takes like two seconds and it's free.

I'm updating now, I'll let you know if my player mysteriously dies.

Edit: It tells me it's updating and not to touch the power but it ejected the cd right before and it's just sitting there. I think I'll wait and see how this plays out...
I didn't have any trouble with it, the file was a an ISO that was Zipped. so, unzipped, burned the ISO, ( did it on my macbook pro with disk utilty ). didn't give any verify errors. its flashing right now. will report back.
I got my Compaq tc4400 out and am in the process of burning it as we speak.
My ole' Lite-On drive must be dying. Two burns now and the resulting data is bunk. The NEC drive burn was successful fortunately but I'm bummed about the Lite-On.
Spare in warranty player updating now. Fingers and toes crossed.

I tried CD-RWs years ago but take to long to format. And in situations like this where I only have 1.5 hours to update and verify 2 payers before an appointment ever sec. counts.

Ok it's turned off and closed the tray. Here goes Avatar

My hell it works! Be prepared for a longer than normal load time and you will probably have to hit >>| to get past the Interactive Menu part. You will want to do that as soon as you see it as it exercises the loader more than I like to hear if you don't. Now I need to verify some other functionality.
quick erase for my Verbatims is only 30 seconds. You must have a bizzy schedule.
Got it updated and Avatar is working! I doubt they added anything else, but let's see...
Flash went fine, Avatar loaded up but is stuck at the menu animation. the background video is playing but the buttons never appeared so I have no way to actually start the movie. going to try restarting the player
post #11094 of 13238
OK cool...

Now who wants to do some experimenting with some DTS Master Audio discs and the analog outs for us and report back??

It's working and just in time my full week rental at hastings is up tomorrow, saved me from throwing $7 bones down the drain.
k, after 2 restarts and formatting my BD flash storage, it loaded the disc properly and is now playing.

figured i'll let it play through, then test some HDDVD titles later to make sure all seems well.
HD DVD still works. However, just tried Atonement and it's still muted on bitstreaming.
Well this appears to only be a update for Avatar. Akira stil has loading with workaround issues and no audio on Attonment HD-DVD.

BTW - Cocoon plays fine in 1.4 it came in the mail today so I was able to verify before I went to 1.5.

BTW - loader gets updated to 0321 whatever that means. Same on both units.

My main unit is acting a little different on startup with Avatar, but this is probably becasue I know when to hit >>|

So that confirms 2 successful updates on a 11/07 and 02/08 build. The 11/07 got a new loader about 11 months ago.

I am now going to go away and you won't hear from me until I have verified if any of the other play issues still exist. Then I'm going to call Samsung and report that they still need to work on this player
post #11099 of 13238
Yea, the 24fps Paramount/Dreamworks flickering/tearing is still there on some titles (like Beowulf especially and Disturbia, oddly didn't notice it on Into The Wlid). I think I'm done with this player (have I said that before? )

Ya it's worse with Transformers that I have ever seen it.

Also NTP still works but is off by 2 days and 12 hours or so. I assume that is just because the Sammy NTP server is off? Don't really care about the date and time anyhow. I forgot to try to update OTA and see if it told me I was out of date but if I remember on 1.3 that it was still saying it was current.

Glad to know that Sammy will correct unplayable disc issue. Sadly I would have liked to see some of these things fixed.

No back to our regulary scheduled program. I will check Hancock and then might watch Deja Vu over the weekend, but I'm expecting the problems to still exist.
