BD-UP5000 Universal Player Samsung [OFFICIAL OWNERS THREAD] & FAQ - Page 373

I ran 1.4 first to try and avoid the freezing when running the 1.5 firmware update. The 1.4 update ran without a hitch but 1.5 still froze the player when it was finished. No biggy, just pulled the plug and now Avatar is running beautifully. So far most of the movie looks as incredible as the Transformers IMAX scenes. And to be honest, i don't miss the 3D at all.

1.5 worked great using active ISO, which is the software samsung backs for cdr's. I have 2 of these babies and they both are GOLDEN! I see what you guys mean about PQ and AQ.

Firmware update freezing is nothing new on 5K. I remember when I first got mine and upgraded to 1.1, it froze just like most described here. I should have noticed this as a very bad sign of the quality of this player from day one

After updated to 1.5 yesterday (from 1.4 and it did froze at the end and I just need to hit the power button and it powered down after a few seconds), I played Sherlock Holmes BD disc and encountered quite a few skips (known issue for this disc on 5K). Too bad, this player will now officially be retired.

As for AVATAR, too bad Netflix won't have it until the end of the May. Given it is practically 99% CGI, I wouldn't be supprised it will look great and clean in PQ, just like any other cartoons.

I need help with downloading and unzipping this update. I've tried three times and the BD up 5000 will not read the CD. I've tried using image burn with Parallels. Wasn't sure what option to pick. Also tried using toast with MAC and still no luck. Can anyone provide me with some guidance so I can update this player. Sorry....I'm not much of a tech guy.

Toast? Stop making life so difficult off yourself

off yourself?! Harsh, Span, harsh.
Yeah... Disk Utility worked fine for me on my iMac.

I right-clicked on the iso file (after unzipping) and selected "Open with... Disk Utility"... then selected the file from the list and clicked the Burn icon.

I even burned at 24x (the max speed of my iMac's internal burner) and all was well.

Still not sure what I'm going to do about Avatar. I care not about the lack of 3D... but if I like the movie I might wish I'd waited for the rumored 4-disc "Ultimate" one later this year... and if I hate the movie, I'll probably be better off not buying

I am also using 1.3 as I've not had any problems and was afraid 1.4 might cause me the same problems as some other folks have had moving to 1.4.

I would really like to know if you tried 1.4, what the problems were that caused you to go back to 1.3, and if those problems are present in 1.5, either Blu Ray or HD-DVD.
Thanks-

mr.kludge, can you add this to your work list to send to Samsung?

Sorry Jimmy as I currently have no BD burning ability (and don't plan to for quite some time) I really can't report that issue. Also, those discs are specifically (at least some of them) expressly not supported according to all the Sammy documentation?

Someone else will need to complain about that. I have only reported specific issues I have first hand knowledge and experience with. Nice to have this community however that can at least confirm that my issues are not unique.

1.5 update note.

All of these lockup issues at the end of the update is perplexing to me. Both of my players went off without a hitch. Both were on 1.4 and have been very recently reset and some if not all persistent memory was erased. I wonder if that is a factor here. The updates did go slightly different than I remember. The TV screen blanked out many more times than I remember and causes some minor panic on my part. But other than that seemed to be the same.

Every update I have done on these puppies has gone off without a hitch and no locking up that I recall. Put disc in, it verifies and reads the update, spits the disc out and asks if you want to update, displays CD-UP for a time then sucks the disc back in and after what seems like a long pause and lockup (with CD-UP still displayed) turns itself off (the last part I might have wrong as I have never watched or timed the last part after the CD gets sucked back in). This last updates however seemed to go much quicker than the others have.

Make sure you use Toast 9 or 10 use the disk copy option with the image file sub option. When you select the image use the un-zipped .iso file and not the disk image that mounts. This is the method I always have used with this player. I have to use (or used to have to use) Disk Utility to make other updates for a couple of m other players.

Sounds like DU works fine as well. I just find Toast quicker to use since I rarely use DU for burning.

Oh, and for best success use Verbatim media. I'm sure that other media will work, but this player simply loves Verbatim CD-Rs, DVD-R and dual layer DVD+Rs. I have never tried a DVD-R DL, if such a thing actually exists?

I have had trouble with other brand DVD+R DLs in this player. Ripped Disney titles don't play right using TDK DL media where other studios movies will, however I have had no problem with Sony DL media. I don't recall any issues with other than Verbatim DVD-Rs, but haven't used anything else for years after some bad experience with Black Friday freebies years ago. A couple times, in a pinch at work, I have had to use DVD+Rs (I think Memorex and Maxell) and I think those have worked ok.
^Also loves Verbatim CD-RWs just as much! That's all I've ever used to update (besides the first and/or second update that was done via the network).

Kludge, that might have been the common factor in the lockups, I didn't clear the memory/reset the settings before upgrading (or after, which may be a good idea). I have a November 2007 build.
Yes, mine locked up on me after updating too. Memorex CD-RW. Lock up happened right after it brought the empty disk tray back in. Thankfully, I was fairly certain it was done by then, and when I turned the machine back on, it was using 1.5. Haven't played any disks in it, though.

Mine froze on the 1.3 to 1.5, let it sit a half an hour, unplugged it and was running 1.5. Threw and HD DVD in and it played fine. I've got no problem Blu-rays that the player wouldn't read so I can't confirm anything about Blu-ray fixes to non playing Blu-rays. I'd guess the freezing issue seems to happen with the 1.3 to 1.5 update. Doesn't appear to hurt anything though.
happens on 1.4 to 1.5 also, probably hardware-dependent.
Confirming what others are reporting...
Went from 1.3 to 1.5 using a CD-R and it froze. Let it sit about an hour and then had to unplug it. Thankfully, it was updated to 1.5 when I powered it back on and discs play fine.

1. 1.3 to 1.4 Problems Resolved?

May I ask those that had not upgraded to 1.4 due to problems, has the 1.5 firmware fixed any issues?

I have only had time to try 1 movie, and that played fine. However, before I declare 1.5 a winner, I must say that in the past this has been the case. I would update to 1.4, then I would be able to play a movie or 2 before the freezing problem started. So, it looks promising, but just wondered how others with this issue were finding the new firmware.

2. Problem with clearing (formatting) persistent memory?

For as long as I can remember, I have had a problem when formatting (clearing) the HD side of persistent memory. When I get to the 'are you sure' part were I ok the format function of HD persistent memory, my unit freezes. I have to power off the unit before I can do anything else. I can do this with the remote power button, but the cursor buttons do not work as well as the return function. I have to power down to get out of the persistent memory area.

I still have this issue with 1.5. Is this a problem for anyone else, am I doing something wrong, etc.?

Regards to all.

Mine does that too, but I've found that if you press the eject button on the remote it'll snap out of it.

Hi. Like I said, never had problems with either 2012 or Beowulf. Just grabbed the first discs available to test player with new FW update.
Just played Avatar last evening: would not play at first ''your blu-ray player needs an update'' etc etc... I had to do a cold restart (FF button) then it played okay but it's doing a lot of sounds when it loads and it's very slow loading (2 mins 3 secs to the 20th Fox blu-ray disc logo).
For comparison purpose, PS3 loads to Fox logo in 57 secs. Cheers.

Thanks for the info. Will try that in the future plus will not be as concerned about it as I had been up til now.

So far I have played 1 Blu and 1 Red movie without a problem. Picture and sound were great on both. Will try an SD movie tonight. I am beginning to think that this player is a keeper again.

Updated mine today, 1.4 to 1.5 went without any problem. Put Avatar in and it played fine altho I only tried 15min. worth so will watch it through to the end tonite. Had to change my audio back to bitstream A and my AVR showed it was Hd master for audio which is 5.1 but for my listening I used PLIIx for my 7.1 system and audio on this movie sounds better than what I heard at the theater.

Just posted a fairly comprehensive list of fixes and new problems with 1.5 on the problem discs thread.

Just a quick note that I am currently viewing DeJa Vu and it is not completely fixed, but much better. I have had couple minor blips between 1 hour and and 1.5 hours into the film. Much better than before and barely noticeable. When I watched this before it seemed to do it every couple min. in the middle of the film. They are not at chapter breaks and are not repeatable at the same places. Just had another at about 1:15. That is 3 from 1 hour to that point.

Hi all. See my post in the problems thread. I have ran into two BDs that used to play that now don't; Sunshine gets stuck in in a loop at the video right before the menu and Pirates 3 gets stuck at the skull and their is no menu and it gets crabby at you for not making a selection.

BTW - these were problems reported with the p1200 at one point.
Pirates 3 and Sunshine play fine with 1.4. I forgot to mention that Pirates 3 also gets stuck before the skull in the language selection screen and you have to skip through (using the disc menu button). That is probably the reason that it does not load right. Seems the code to fix Avatar might have broke both of these?

My copy of Sunshine does the same thing after 1.5. This is unaceptable to me but seems to be something Samsung is good at: breaking something that worked before an upgrade:

Ok, that is 3 confirmed. Please E-mail/chat/call Sammy with this issue that way we can get them to fix it, hopefully. They probably mixed old code with new or the new workaround broke old ones.

Can someone verify Pirates 3?

Got to 2nd level support and these issues and several others have been reported. Have a case # assigned. If others call that should escalate things.
